Although sports may be more fun than studying for a test, students will elevate their grades by focusing further on their schoolwork. “America lags behind other countries academically and over 20 nations have greater high school graduation rates” (Ripley 10). The first semester of Premont Independent School District they had “no upcoming games and because of this, 80% of the students succeeded in their classes, in comparison to the preceding fall, only 50% passed their classes” (Ripley 11). In order to bring students’ academic grades up, schools should start considering scaling back on sports. Ripley states that “grass fields and bleachers can be expensive to sustain the equipment for sports” (11). Furthermore, Ripley also states how they “need to pay for buses and hire substitutes when they travel to a game” (11).
