Some children who are expose to secondhand smoke may have many serious health problems such as ear infections, coughs and colds, respiratory problem and tooth decay. Some country they don’t even restrict the age to buy the cigarette. My country Vietnam is an example. We can buy anything including alcohol and cigarette when we have enough money no matter how old we are. The children don’t know what is right or wrong. When they see an adult smoke, first time they can feel uncomfortable, but it wont when they see it so many time. The worst thing about that is every child has curious. They want to try something new, something different from the other. However, they don’t know about the health problem of that habit. The only thing they know is the cigarette is legal. It is not banned, so that it is not bad. According to WHO, teenage smokers suffer from shortness of breath almost three times as often as teens who don’t smoke. One cigarette contain about 600 ingredients and when burn the cigarette, we are creating more than 7000 chemicals. In those chemicals, there are about 69 chemicals that increase the risk of cancer to our body. In addition, carbon monoxide is also one of 7000 chemicals in cigarette smoke (American Lung Association). Carbon monoxide is also found in released in car exhaust fumes. That chemical is caused of global warming. The reason that we don’t consider cigarette smoke as the main impact of global warming because there is very small amount of carbon monoxide can be releasing when we burn the cigarette. However, when the number of smoker is increasing significantly, it can be the real problem. According to the World Health Organization, “ about 1.1 billion people world wide smoke, and this number is expected to triple over the next 25 years”(Gosselin). Not only the cigarette smoke can impact the environment but also the tobacco farming also can impact the environment. Gosselin also pointed out that, “ the widespread monoculture inherent in growing tobacco extracts six times more potassium from the soil than growing other plants does”. Particularly, before the cigarette can be used, we have to dry the tobacco. In order to dry one kilogram of tobacco, we have to burn about 150 kilogram of wood. 150 kilogram of wood is about 1.2 million of hectares of forest and about 600 million trees.
