Should Schools Have Dress Codes?

Decent Essays
In this essay I will be discussing the rule of dress codes. I think that schools should have a dress code because many people see clothes as distractive. According to a recent study, approximately 75% of students did better in their overall grades at a school that upholds a dress code. The percentage significantly drops to about 25% for a school that does not have a dress code policy.

Many schools throughout america have added the dress code policy. It helps to keep people from being distracted in school. School is a learning environment so it would be disruptive to wear inappropriate clothes.

Most are girls, and on occasions, boys that struggle with the standards, therefore they should be lowered. It’s taking away from your class time, limits self-expression, and the rules can sometimes not be correctly administered are all problems caused by dress codes standards. The dress code can take away from class time because everyone is more concerned with how we are dressed, rather than worrying about if we’ll do good on our next math test, or studying for the history final. During class, teachers can stop their lesson to tell one of their students that they are violating dress codes, therefore taking time away from class and from other students learning for something that is not relevant outside of school.…

Administration such as Senator Stephenson must immediately send innocent children to the office for this ridiculous blue-coated “Dress-code Violation” attire and pressing suspension to those who wish not to humiliate and embarrass themselves throughout the school day. I say it is downright deliberate intent to embarrass every student in every way possible by their operation of throwing the “Blue Suit” upon us. But certainly, from here on out, Westlake High School Dress-code shall no longer be enforced. We, students of Westlake High School now consider ourselves free to wear as we wish. He has refused to pass other laws on how teachers shouldn’t loosely teach us students without the intent of us learning something, yet he’d rather enforce something less important in a school atmosphere; an interrupted right to wear what we solemnly desire to express ourselves.…

In the United States, over half of the schools (private and public) have some kind of dress code set in place. Many people think that dress code is unnecessary and many are pro-dress code. I have found that the standard dress code has (for the most part) been interpreted negatively. Dress codes are set in place to prevent distractions from one student to another and to prevent students from wearing inappropriate clothing that puts off bad images about themselves. Although most students should take it upon themselves to dress accordingly, many do not and that is why dress code has become such a hot topic.…

Have you ever been “coded” while you were at school? Most kids think when they are wearing what they want to wear/comfortable clothes they tend to learn better. Also, some think that dress codes are taken way too far, and if a staff member is questionable about what one is wearing then they can simply just ask them a question.…

Dress codes should and should not be required in schools because some clothes are too revealing, students have an advantage of hiding weapons in hats or coats, but some schools force students to wear uniforms. First of all, some clothes that students wear are too revealing. Kids come to school sometimes with shorts that do not cover their bottoms, guys have their pants sagging, and some girls wear shirts that reveal their chest area. Sports have uniforms that may show objects that should not be shown. For example, volleyball players are required to wear spandex to play in but some spandex do not cover their entire behind.…

Everyone has their own opinion on what attire is appropriate for school; some people may feel that some of the clothes that the girls wear is “too much”, but what exactly is too much? A majority would say that revealing shoulders and bra straps are inappropriate, but others would think differently. While some of the clothes people wear shouldn’t be worn in a learning environment, society shouldn’t be biased and make a fair dress code for both male and female students because it can make female women students ashamed of their bodies, which is degrading and makes them out to be sexual objects. With male students having the privilege to wear almost whatever they want, it makes females feel like they should cover up their bodies due to the fact that their bodies can distract boys from getting an education.(Since a females education isn’t as important). There has been many incidents where a female student would be taken out of class or sent home because her shoulders were showing or was wearing shorts on a hot day.…
