Should School Uniforms Be Worn

Over the past decade, there's been an ongoing debate around the school system; uniforms. Many people believe that school uniforms are unnecessary, or that they're simply another item on their kids' back to school supply list. However, statistics have shown that uniforms not only discipline students, but keep them safe, and are cheaper than regular clothes. And while they may not be the most fashionable clothes on the planet, I think we can all agree that keeping our students safe should be valued more than looks. As someone who used to wear uniforms, I can assure that students are more focused on school than looks. Before my school switched to uniforms, everyone would judge each other on one main thing; appearence. Kids would constantly …show more content…
As stated by the OSSI, school uniform safety advantages include preventing "Violence and theft related to clothing, expensive jewelry, and other personal items" (OSSI 2). In fact, a school in Long Beach, California reported that "Fights decreased 51 percent, sex offenses decreased 74 percent, weapons offenses decreased 50 percent, assault and battery offenses decreased 34 percent, and vandalism decreased 18 percent. Less than 1 percent of the students chose not to wear uniforms" (CRF USA). Other safety advantages include "Helping school staff & security quickly spot intruders and any other individuals who do not belong" (OSSI 3). They may say that school uniforms limit self expression. But the reality is that school uniforms are only meant to be worn at school. Hence, school uniforms. School staff isn't going to be giving any students a referral at school for wearing their normal clothes. Also, people who argue this, seem to forget that there's no school on the weekends. Students can still express themselves as much as they want for the remaining hours of their day and the weekend. And if self-expression is so important for someone, they can still do so. They can style their hair how they want, wear the makeup they want, and jewelry they want. Maybe they tuck their shirts in all the time, or don't button up the last button on their shirt- They can still do that with uniforms! School uniforms do not in any way make it absolutely impossible for someone to express
