Today in America, more and more people are becoming overweight and obese. Obesity is becoming a major problem in the United States. According to Melissa Abramotivs, the author of “Obesity” more than fifty million people in the United States weigh over one fifth of their body’s ideal weight (Abramotivs 2). Studies from “Nutrition and Weight Management” states that nine out of twenty adult women and one out of four adult men are trying to lose weight. The eating habits of American citizens are starting to get out of control. Also, the government should regulate food because the cost of both public and private health insurance and healthcare would drop drastically. By restricting food, fast food restaurants would serve better and healthier choices (Baskt). On the other hand, the government should not regulate food because it raids the people’s right to public and private right of freedom. By restricting food, government would spend way more money by focusing on one problem. The restriction of food would increase the food prices from restaurants to stores all over in order to meet the government’s standards. Ultimately, food restrictions would cause unemployment, business failures, closing of restaurants, and lesser competition (Kiel). The government wants to keep people protected and make life better. Therefore, they should have the right to regulate what one person consumes.
