Graduation Speech: Do Schools Kill Creativity

As a home school Mom, I sometimes get wrapped up in the world’s view of public education and try my hardest to emulate that at home. It sucks me in. After all, that is what we are taught, right? We are taught the only way to educate our kids; the only right way that is, is to model our home school like that of a public school classroom because public school is the “standard”. So, since my kid is in fourth grade he must study A, B, and C if I am to keep him on the right path. No detours. We must not play during school hours or be creative in our approach. We must learn using typical textbooks. We must study constantly; with no distractions. We must be rigid with our schedule; English at 9 am, Math at 9:45 am, History at 10:30 am, and of course …show more content…
We watch TED Talks (there are two in particular that are my favorite and if you have the time to watch them I highly recommend doing so: 1) Sir Ken Robinson’s Do Schools Kill Creativity? – it is by far the most watch TED Talk ever and helps to remind me that taking my sons creative interests and using them to educate him is by far the best thing I have done for his education. 2) Logan LaPlante’s Hackschooling Makes Me Happy – This is Evan’s favorite because he likes the concept of using things that interest him as a means to get an education). Whatever we learn about on a daily basis gets created in his Minecraft home school world. It allows him to play Minecraft, create, and it also allows him to remember what we learned about in our day. When we learned about volcanoes, he created one in Minecraft. When we learned about geography, he created the earth. When we learned about John the Baptist, he placed John in the water with a line of folks waiting to be baptized. I think you get my

Before the advent of compulsory education laws in the United States from 1852-1918 a majority of children were educated by their families or communities. This early type of home education was the norm worldwide until the turn of the century, and is still widely practiced in developing countries. However, in developed countries since the universal adoption of such compulsory education laws home education has been driven into a more deviant subcategory. As a result, the homeschooling community as an identifiable social subcategory and centralized concept was born circa 1965. This was an ironic sociological trend since home education was originally the dominant method of American education which then progressed into a deviant and stigmatized subcategory.…

Homeschooling and unschooling is often mistaken to be the same form of education because they both take place at home instead of in traditional public schools. However, homeschooling differs greatly from unschooling. Homeschooling is defined as a form of education that is taught at home by the student’s parents (Potter, 2014, p.1). Parents say choose homeschooling because their kids still follow a structured curriculum and the parents have say in the curriculum because they are the ones that teach it. Unschooling is the total opposite, in where the role of the parent and student is reversed.…

A science conception that I would make into a fun activity is that all metals are attracted to magnets. I would have my scientists work in groups and each group would have different pieces of metals. The students would use a chart to fill in which metals were attracted to the magnet and which were not. I would then ask the students to write a story together about the different metal pieces, making each piece of metal a different character. In the story the students must implement which metals did not attract to the magnets.…
