Should Scary Stories 3 be banned? The book that I read was “Scary Stories 3 More Tales to Chill Your Bones” by Alvin Schwartz. My book was about many different stories of gruels, creatures, and ghost. Many people think it’s banned because it’s gruesome, and the profanity. To be honest I do think it should be banned. Depending on your religion it could possibly offend you. My first reason that “Scary Stories 3” should be banned is the profanity. They do talk a little more advanced for this age level. The word usage isn’t suitable for most children. Many parents wouldn’t allow their children to read “Scary Stories 3”. Would you let your children read a book that had profanity? My second reason is how gruesome “Scary Stories

So if it’s all made up, why do people feel the need to ban it? What everyone thinks nowadays is that if we can stop letting our children read foul things such as this, then they will grow up to be a better civilization. But what they are saying is wrong. If we ban books due to a few bad words or some “sensitive topics”, then our children will never grow up knowing right from wrong. The authors of these books put their hard work, time, and dedication into writing these books.…

Material deemed by some as offensive can help children experiencing similar situations realize that they are not alone in their struggles. Books portraying difficult topics can build compassion, and understanding by exposing children to different life circumstances. This means that not only can the words possibly offend other students, but it can lead to something worse such as physical fights. The use of profanity in the book encourages students to use this language in their life as well. As kids use this language, words can be heard. As these words are heard, people may take offense to the use of the language which may lead to deeper and more advanced problems within the student body. The book should be banned for this reason, because students should not be encouraged to use this type of language for the reason that there are many students that may not want to hear the language being used.…

The reasons for its being banned are gore, horror, and cannibalism. The first reason my story is banned is because of gore. One example of gore in my book is in the story The Dead Hand where it describes how Tom Pattison gets his hand ripped off by “The Dead Hand” and how “...there was nothing but a ragged stump oozing blood.” Also, in that story, there is a very gory picture of some creature with flesh falling off of his…

Most schools however ban it because of sexually explicit material. They don’t want the kids to be forced to have to hear anything that is unfit for the ears. School Board member Scott Veerkamp says when talking about a book called Song of Solomon, "I think if we give them a book with that smut in it, it legitimizes it” (Penner Par. 15). The book he is talking of a book about a black man who comes to grips with a complex family history. It also begins with suicide and ends with suicide and has a few sexual passages.…

I think that these reasons are good reasons to ban the book but I also feel that it should not be banned. This book can open up a teen’s eyes to the world around them. People that seem ok can be struggling and this book teaches that you should not just go into denial like Beth, but you should be more like Calvin and take action when someone is down in the dumps. The profanity in the story I also believe is a positive.…

There has been a request from several people to remove books from the curriculum such as Huckleberry Finn and Catcher in the Rye due to some inappropriate language. Although I am aware that foul language is not acceptable inside the walls of high schools, I cannot assist with that decision. Many people out in the real world use that language on TV shows and movies, social media, with friends and family, and definitely in numerous books! A couple of books with a few choice words should not harm anyone. Most likely, the high school students will already recognize all of them.…

The American Library Association created a list of books that are prohibited to read in schools. Due to violence and “mature” content, parents challenge books because they don’t find them very comely for their children to read ; the parents believe the books will sully their child’s mind. The list of banned and challenged books includes the story of “Grendel” and The Alice Series. “Grendel” by John C. Gardner tells the 8th century epic of Beowulf from Grendel…

Books end up on the censored or banned list because are reported to have content that is believed to be harmful to the reader. For children’s books, many complaints are made by parents who think the content of the book could harm their child’s mind or may be an inappropriate topic to learn about. Some of the main complaints are made due to: religion, sexual orientation, political views, violence and “obscene” language. Goosebumps should not be banned because it contains no offensive language and the central character never dies, the protagonists can be both male and female, they can contain good moral lessons for children and promote family values, the books depict protagonists escaping doom with their own wit and ingenuity, and young readers love simple language and easily-followed yet engrossing plots. Goosebumps was banned primarily because it caused fear among the children.…

Often times parents will challenge a book for its language and the violence present in the book, because they want to keep their child innocent and protected from the wrongs of the world. While it is a understandable concern, it is ridiculous considering what the average high schooler sees and hears in the halls of their school on a daily basis. Parents like this wanted to ban A…

Fortunately, for every group pushing for bans on literature, there are organizations that fight for this freedom. One such organization is the American Civil Liberties Union. In the year 2000, when discussing the topic of book banning, the organization stated that, “Permitting restraints on literature sets the stage for attacks on all expression that is artistically or politically controversial or that portrays unpleasant realities of life” (American Civil Liberties Union). Although some books may contain graphic violence or sexual content, and therefore of course should be kept out of the hands of children, I’d like to think that these widespread en masse bans of such literature are a poor way to go about it. It’s not as if middle or high school students are incapable of understanding and comprehending dark or more adult subject matter.…
