In order for this new race to serve humanity, they would need to be designed in such a way as to love the jobs they carry out: otherwise humanity would feel guilty about enslaving them. Creating R to perform specific tasks, for example the robot in the scenario was created to not only clean but to fulfill the sexual desires of its owner, would be a danger to society. Steve Peterson claims in Chapter 18 of Robot Ethics, that robots could be created with hardwired desires that would cause them to enjoy the duties that they would be designed to complete. Fulfilling their duties would be comparable to a human eating food for fuel (284). However, creating a robot that is programmed to fulfill sexual needs for fuel (food) would be creating a being that was occasionally forced to rape, or manipulate people, to obtain its required fuel. This type of invention would be cruel to possible victims of R as well as to R. If the sexual design component is removed from the scenario, and R is simply highly intelligent and having sex with L, there is still the problem of enslaving a conscious …show more content…
Human relationships and sex can be messy and often disappointing, but R can eliminate all the uncertainties of sex and relationships. R would be a stable personality, without the mood swings that often lead to abuse and infidelity, and sex with R would not only insure that orgasm was reached at least once, and without the worry of unwanted pregnancy or venereal disease. With all these benefits people will quickly realize the perks of avoiding relationships and sex with human partners. Pregnancies would all be planned; therefore, when a woman decided to produce offspring she would go to a sperm bank to be supplied with the needed sperm for a child. However, if one half the couples involved are a man and his R, he not only has to find an egg, he has to find a uterus to grow it in: this will be a challenge. With this type of intentional act required to become pregnant, the number of babies being born will begin to decrease. A dramatic population decrease will cause problems for people economically and evolutionary. Sex is an innate desire that humans are generally born with. This desire is what allows the species to continue. When a species no longer breeds for whatever reason, the species becomes extinct. When humans began to choose relationships with R instead of its human counterpart R will become the fitter species and
