Overall the essays that we have read this semester have been good. There are a few essays in particular that I think benefited me the most was “The Time to Act I Now” written by Al Gore, “Just Walk on By” written by Brent Staples, and the “Letter from Birmingham Jail” written by Martin Luther King. These essays have benefited me in a numerous amount of ways in which I am going to explain how their writing styles helped me become a better writer. Staples helped me a lot in which he taught me to explain my reasoning fully so that the audience know exactly what I am talking about. Another thing that Staples taught me was to explain the setting of the story in full detail so the readers can visualize what’s actually happening in the story this…

Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart are all composers that are universally known whether you like that specific genre of music or prefer listening to modern day artists. These particular composers have transcended the test of time because their music is taught in music classes currently and many composers have crafted their art by gaining inspiration from their music. Not many composers in this decade will have their musical accomplishments published in a textbook. However, there is one particular composer, conductor, and musician named John Williams, who has created many of film scores which he was nominated for over forty plus academy awards.…

My obnoxious yellow posterboard read “We may not have chosen the time, but the time has chosen us.” The time was Donald Trump’s inauguration and everyone there was chosen to fight for everyone’s rights as American citizens. I held it high above a plethora of pink yarn woven into cat ears. The hat, a sticker on my head, and a logo on my shirt announced my ideals. More than 500,000 chanted in Washington and 5 million worldwide, and all together we sounded like one voice.…
Jesse Owens was a very revolutionary figure. Some of the reasons he was revolutionary was that he won four gold medals at the 1936 Olympic Games, at the 1935 Big Ten Track and Field Championship he broke 3 world records and he tied one world record, and after he was a runner in the olympics he was a motivational speaker. Jesse Owens was one of the most well-known African American athletes in sports history. He also was one of the greatest olympians to ever compete, probably ranking in the top-5. After considering many 20th century leaders and revolutionaries Jesse Owens was one of the few that had a major effect on our country’s history because he stood up for african americans rights, Owens’ accomplishments while running track, and Owens’ accomplishments after running track.…

On a sweltering summer day in the City of Atlanta or the “ATL” as it is affectionately known today, I visited my best friend while he visited his father for the summer. That day I remember vividly because as soon as we stepped outside of the airport to take the “MARTA” train, I began to sweat profusely. Anyone that has been to Atlanta during the summer knows it is incredibly humid there. A week earlier I had seen my friend, and we planned out what we were going to do that week I visited. I knew I wanted to visit Spellman College, Morehouse College, Clark Atlanta University, and Morris Brown College, but before I could visit the Atlanta University Center or the “AUC” as it is called to the locals, I felt compelled to visit the grave site of one of the most influential human being to walk this earth.…

Williams, in writing this story, takes a very detached, objective approach to storytelling. The characters are understood as a result of their own words and behaviors (Newlin 149). There are no internal monologues, no moments of great character insight. Rather, the story unfolds as it would in front of a silent observer of the scene (Newlin 149).…
