Religious Instruction was not compulsory until the 1944 Education Act, however, was still incorporated throughout the curriculum. When put in place the Act ensured that religious education and collective worship were to take place in all schools particularly if the school was an aided school as the governors were dismissive of any teacher who didn’t ‘deliver religious instruction, efficiently and sustainably’. (Cooper, 2012) Religious Instruction (RI) soon became Religious Education (RE) but did not officially become RE until the 1988 Education Act which then stated that within the curriculum, RE had to broadly reflect the Christian tradition whilst taking account of other principal religions. This act also enabled parents to withdraw their children from the subject and even gave teachers an opportunity to withdraw from teaching the subject itself(UK Parliament, 2015)so if it was so reinforced back then why is it not now? Why are over half of the schools failing in religious education? (Ofsted, Oct 2013) Multicultural diversity? Less importance of the subject area? Agency and structure play a major role in this debate as it is the way we determine our own circumstances through personal choice and also how we are defined and influenced by external factors for example different cultures/diversities. …show more content…
