Should Public Service Be Required

Improved Essays
As a 16 year old I am not surprised that I would argue against public service. There are many flaws in the plan to try to enforce public service between the ages of 18 to 25. Now do not get me wrong, I think that public service is a great way to get involved in your community, and to help make a change; but I also believe that it is voluntary. Meaning that it is not mandatory, and it should not be required. It is your choice to get involved and volunteer, in the end what you choose shows you character. I am not saying that if you don’t complete some type of public service that you are a bad person, but I am saying that it definitely does not hurt to volunteer some time at one point in your life. No one is so busy that they cannot offer up one hour in their life to make a change, big or small. “Volunteers are the only human beings on the face of the earth who reflect this nation's compassion, unselfish caring, patience, and just plain love for one another” (Bombeck).
First off, although I think very highly of public service there is simply no way to enforce someone to do the “mandatory” service if it was required. If someone did not

Public service has been proven to reduce stress, and actually make you healthier. When it is volunteered, and not enforced. Serving can affect your mood, and emotions in a positive way, if it is for the right reasons. Choosing to volunteer on you own account can actually make you a more joyful person alone. It can encourage responsibility by supporting community resources. When you complete a task that you willingly out your own time and effect into I can give you a sense of completeness. But if it is enforced it can make a person feel pressured, and for a person who always seems to be busy it can become very stressful. If you make public service mandatory then you are taking the benefits of choosing to volunteer away. Along with the joy of

Community service is not as bad as some people make it out to be. I myself had an internal groan when I heard that community service was required and would be set as a grade. I had only known volunteerism as doing a dull boring task with no discernible reward. But after experiencing it for myself I found it quite the contrary. Volunteering is a way to meet new people and witness a group working toward a greater cause.…

Before attending high school, my elementary school teachers would talk about civic engagement, and their descriptions lead me to believe that participating in community service would be boring and burdensome. I remember my teachers saying things like,” In high school you’re going to have to do community service in order to graduate. Such as volunteer at an elderly home, or an animal shelter.” Prior to actually completing a service project, I only had an unappealing image of community service in mind. However, once I got to high school, I grew to love community service as well as learn the importance of…

Many of the organizations that I am involved in, including FFA, 4-H, and LYO, take part in several service projects throughout the year. As a result, I have been involved in multiple community service activities over the course of my high school career, such as taking a week-long mission trip to Nashville, Tennessee this past summer, or just spending an evening during the holiday season Christmas caroling around town. Although some people aren't always willing to give up their time to help others, I believe that an essential aspect of being a member of a community is being willing and able to devote your time to helping others. It helps you develop positive relationships, and it lets the people you're helping know that there are places they can turn to for support. It helps you build up your responsibility, reliability, and work ethic, and it provides community members with a chance to establish lasting connections with one another.…

Per the teachings of John Locke in his Second Treatise of Government, man has “liberty to dispose of his person or possessions” in whatever way he would like to, so long as he does not destroy himself or anyone else (Locke 102). Following this philosophy, the government should not be allowed to require every citizen to give up two years of their limited time to live in civic service, no matter what virtues it may promote. Two years is a long time to give up to your government. The common citizen has a right to their life, and deciding what to do with it. Many people still choose to freely give of their time to help others, whether that is through military service or religious service.…
