Should Public Colleges be Free for In-State Residents? The Institute for Higher Education Policy says families making 100,000 dollars a year cannot even afford 60% of American Colleges. The poorest 2% of families will only send 20% of their children to college. Meanwhile the richest 2% of families will send 90% of their kids to college. This should be fixed. Should public colleges be free for residents of that state? I think it should. College students lack time. They are always studying or doing homework for their classes, so they do not have time to get a job. Also on average their families do not have much to send them to help out. The National Public Radio says that the average family only makes 50,000 dollars per year. They still have to buy the necessary things for themselves also with taxes and every other expense leaves them with not much to send to their children in college. The NPR also says that 95% of college students only make $5,000 a year and only have $1,500 in the bank. …show more content…
We just need to put some more of that money towards education funding. Us News says that in 2016 $68,307,000 went to funding education. If we could raise that to near $100,000,000 we could pay all of our teachers and profess0rs that work at the public colleges. Also, free college only applies to residents of that state. If they go out of state for college, they would still have to pay for college, and foreign people would still have to pay to go to college in America. USA Today says the average American pays $10,489 in taxes every year. If all 245.3 million adults in America pay $10,489 in taxes, that is $2,453,000,000 tax dollars that the government can use. If we put 100,000,000 dollars there is still over 2.4 billion dollars more to use. We could make that $150,000,000 and still have plenty left
