What was once something that was very simple, playing sports has become a complicated venture. With society placing such emphasis on wealth and fame, professional sports have become that lure for it. These are games that kids play growing up, so why is it that society has placed such an importance on them. As professional sports athletes make many millions of dollars for playing these kids games, the importance of them has risen. Status among these athletes have gone to new heights, placing them on the forefront of society. Our society needs to re-evaluate what is important, and start placing emphasis on that. What used to be an escape from the everyday realities of life, has become a bidding war for the elite players of a particular sport. There used to be a time when athletes were happy to give out autographs to admiring fans, now athletes charge for doing this. Gone are the days that a father can take his son to a baseball game, enjoy an afternoon or evening with a hot dog and a soda, and enjoy the event without having to break the bank. A person can’t even park their car without paying high rates just to do so. What can be done to correct this? Society needs to get back to basics and deal with the real problems that affect everyday life. The people who deal with these concerns daily need to be compensated fairly. Athletes are not the only ones who put in time and dedication to their craft. Professionals who deal with matters of life and death, education, and insuring the general public’s security put in many years of training just to perform their duties.
