“If you can read this, thank a teacher.”, an American proverb we’re all familiar with. While you’re at it; thank a firefighter, a nurse, or a police officer, too. These are a few public-sector jobs that really make an impact to the success and safety of the community. How about pro athletes? Have you ever been placed in a situation that they really helped you out in a time of need? Without a doubt we all love a good sports game but the salaries they are making, in comparison, are outlandish. Although athletes are talented, entertaining and famous, it is actually the public-servants who deserve the fortune.

Sometimes we can get annoyed thinking “is she back to do my vitals again?!”, but let’s be honest and admit how monumental nurses are to the function and production of the medical industry. Attending college, doing the internships to get clinical hours and often times working 12 hour shifts to bring home salary ranging from $45,630 to $66,220, doesn’t quite seem fitting (“Ferguson’s”). Professional athletes are not required to obtain any particular schooling nor maintain any standard academically. “Unless you’re finding a cure for cancer or creating world peace, I don’t know if anybody deserves to get that much money”, said Drew Brees with the New Orleans Saints after signing his $100 million contract (qtd. in Anastasia). Seems even one of their own agrees that athletes aren’t the ones most deserving of the big bucks. Being a nurse requires a special kind of heart to work hands on with other people.
