Should Policymakers Use Social Media Influence Health Promotion?

Since 2005 the use of social media among adult population has increased drastically from 8 percent to 72 percent. With that in mind, about 70 percent of healthcare organizations are utilizing social media, especially Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and reaching consumers while influencing their choices and decisions (Ventola, 2014). Thus, it would be quite advantageous to promote important health care policy adopting the everyday use of media and electronic social networking. Therefore, in light of growing need to mitigate prevalent chronic disease diabetes, which was labeled as a silent killer one should be determined in the dissemination of awareness and knowledge at the same time increasing crucial compliance while improving health outcomes. Moreover, the social media would evidently promote patients’ access to various educational information and health care resources as well as allow to participate in virtual support groups helping in goal setting, altering behavior through mutual reinforcement ultimately tracking progress. Those goals achieved by social media are essential in a diabetes self-management education program and may successfully change populations outlook on wellbeing and initiate proper actions to minimize the wide-spreading of this divesting chronic illness. Therefore, by putting into action the interventions supporting given health care policy, the results should create enough evidence to convince legislators and policymakers to go forward and approve presented regulations. However, there is another way in which media maybe be used in health promotion process, and that is advocacy, addressing stakeholders like patients' family, employers, and individuals who have power such as the Department of Health Staff in diabetes prevention.
