Should Plastic Bags Be Banned In The United States?

Improved Essays
According to United Nations Environment Programme, there is approximately 46,000 pieces of plastic floating in every square mile of the ocean! I strongly think that plastic bags should be banned in the whole entire United States. Not only would it encourage people to use reusable bags, it will save many animals, and will prevent toxins from entering into the air. First of all, with a ban on plastic bags, it will encourage people to use reusable bags. Reusable bags have a benefit on not only you, but also the environment around us. Some shops charge people for plastic bags, but gives money to you when you shop with a reusable bag. This means that not only are you helping the environment, you are also saving a large amount of money. Also, you can carry a reusable bag way easier since they usually have larger arm holes so you can put it over your shoulder. Plastic bags tend to have smaller arm holes so you have to carry them with your hands. Almost everyone has experienced plastic bags that end up with holes in them. Reusable bags are proven to be stronger than plastic bags, so you won’t be dealing with any broken bags! …show more content…

Plastic recycling and reusing can become very tricky because the dependence is on location and what types of plastic can be recycled in that factory. Plastics can only be down cycled, meaning they can't be used to make the same quality product and eventually have to go to landfill. Plastics are toxic to produce and don't biodegrade only break down into smaller toxic pieces. Recycling has lead to the over use of plastics and give people the false sense that plastics aren't polluting because they can be recycled. In the article “When Recycling Is Bad for the Environment” by Rachel Cernansky explains the adverse effects of recycling plastic.…

The argument required more for credibility. Summers needed data to counter the other issues that were against his opinion. The reusable bag is an alternative to plastic, an alternative with more problems than benefits. Summer addresses this but gave statistical data on this countering opinion. “San Francisco’s plastic bag ban in 207 resulted in a subsequent spike in hospital emergency room visits due to E.coli, salmonella, and campylobacter-related intestinal infectious diseases.”…

We are using enormous amount of plastic daily. In fact, we feel that plastic is surrounding us. It becomes indispensable for us (Madren 1). Because it is durable and indestructible and has a low density, it starts to accumulate in huge amounts in our oceans, and moves for hundreds of miles away from the original site of pollution and concentrates in five known ocean gyres (Sun). The situation is really very serious now, because thousands of tons of plastics are polluting our oceans and environment, endangering the whole marine life and ecosystems as well as our own heath Plastics exert its harmful and toxic effect on the marine wildlife as a result of ingesting the plastics, also from leaching of plastic toxins, and from getting entangled in…

It is well know that there is an ongoing plastic debris epidemic with an estimated 8 billion tonnes of plastic waste being dumped into the ocean each year (Walter, 2015). With the increasing growth of the human population and the ever expanding affluence of lower income countries plastic waste is only going to increase. Marine ecosystems will be the brunt of this crisis with most terrestrial plastic waste ending its journey in the oceans. The most fragile ecosystems, coral reefs, will be the first to deteriorate from the ongoing epidemic unless changes are made. 50-*0% of all life on the planet live in the oceans (UNESCO, 2015)…

Countries and cities everywhere are trying to ban the sale of plastic water bottles for many different reasons. Some reasons are for health environment and more, but is the ban worth it? I believe that states should start banning plastic water bottles. My fisrt reason I think we should ban plastic water bottles, even though people are recycling, it isn’t enough for how much plastic water bottles we buy, The author, Katy Steinmetz wrote, “""[The bottles] are not being thrown away … They are being recycled." While that's not true of all bottles in the Bay Area, San Francisco is ahead of the average American city -- about 13% of plastics are recycled nationwide.”…

Recycling involves using selected materials from garbage in the manufacture of new products, rather than burying the garbage in a landfill. Recycling saves energy and natural resources but not all sorts of plastics can be recycled, leading to a waste of time, money, human and natural resources. It’s better to throw away your trash rather than recycle it because machines cannot sort all types of plastics and plastics that can’t be sorted end up in landfills. Economically, America’s recycling rates are proven to be very low and only few recyclable materials are actually recycled properly.…

Trash in our community is a huge problem not only for us, but for the animals in our oceans. To begin, plastic toxins can enter the human food chain and drastically hurt humans and the way their bodies work. “toxins can enter the human food chain through eating seafood and can cause harmful substances to enter the body such as lead, cadmium, and mercury. These toxins are linked directly to cancers, birth defects, immune system problems, childhood developmental issues” (Andrews). Most, if not all toxins are very harmful to the human body, and if you were to consume these toxins, the chances of something going wrong is almost slim to nothing.…

Although it is practically impossible to eliminate all the plastic already in the oceans, “experts say the best way to protect animals from plastic is to prevent any more of it from reaching the water” (Smith). Many cities have already placed bans on plastic grocery bags and the sale of plastic water bottles. Since plastic is a material essential for everyday life, it is important to “familiarize yourself with what plastics can be recycled, and keep reusable plastics out of landfills” (Kinnon). Reducing the plastic waste concern will only be possible with the consistent effort of consumers. Notably, “ending plastic pollution is about avoiding plastic in the first place and if unable to, reusing or recycling the material as opposed to tossing it into the garbage towards the landfill or onto the ground embarking it upon a journey to the sea” (Tsiattalos).…
