People today are so wrapped up in getting as much stuff as fast as they can, that the simple pleasures in life are often overlooked. Bigger houses, fancier cars, the latest smartphone – you name it and people want it. Not just any brand any brand will do either; it must be the name brand of that particular item. But what if there is more to life that just getting stuff? What if the secret of living a full life was in how a person lives his or her life? There are stories all the time of individuals who have won millions of dollars in the lottery, only to file bankruptcy a few years later. Such stories are an indication that a full and happy life is not just based on material things, but rather something else. In the book of Matthew in …show more content…
Sounds easy enough, but it is much harder than it appears. When a closer look is taken at what is truly meant by do no judge, it is clear that there are many ramifications by judging others. Jesus says that people will be judged according to how they judge others. He could be referring to judgement after a person dies, or he could be referring to what a lot of people call karma. Karma is the belief that how you treat others is how you will be treated in return. Another item to note in this parable, is that people pass judgement when they do the exact same thing they are judging others for doing. Why do humans feel they have to judge? Just because someone does things different, or believes something other than what another person believes gives them no right to judge someone …show more content…
Of course thinking about punching someone in the face is not nearly as bad as actually doing it. The point Jesus was making is that thoughts of hate, anger, murder, or lust are the things that make people act a certain way and can eventually lead to carrying out those actions if one is not careful. Just think about the implication and change if people were punished for the evil thoughts they had. If just thinking about stealing something or driving over the speed limit would have the same consequence as actually committing the crime, the crime rate would dramatically decrease. The small crimes such as speeding or illegally parking would still happen, but violent crimes such as murder and rape would mostly be non-existent.
The Sermon on the Mount is probably one of the best known passage of the Bible, and talks about doing “good works” such giving to the poor, fasting, and prayer. To an extent, people do “good works” to make themselves feel good, and sometimes for recognition. However, Jesus taught that doing these things should not be done to gain recognition, but rather out of the goodness of one’s heart. No matter what a person’s belief is, this passage of the Bible also gives good advice on being anxious, how to treat others, retaliation, and loving your enemies. For example when talking about retaliation Jesus

Mark Tranvik does an amazing job in translating Martin Luther's treatise: The Freedom of a Christian, where Luther contrasts countless religious components - the body (the inner person) and soul (the other person), and faith and works, - these subjects Luther's uses as an attempt to strengthen and return the Christian faith to its true origin. He argues that works have no effect in obtaining righteousness or salvation, instead it is a natural product of humanity. Instead, acknowledging that salvation is and righteousness is solely attainable through faith, which is the only true way humans can reconcile with God. For all rulers, nobles, Roman Catholic officials - all Christians alike- are held to the same standards of spirituality and faith. Luther is successful in his argument of faith over bodies of work to obtain salvation, when he draws support from scripture and historical context of that time.…

The Bible defines what a sin is through the Ten Commandments and other commandments, yet there are still some things that the Bible is unclear about regarding sin. The Corinthians thought that they knew the right from wrong, but they were mistaken. In 1 Corinthians, Paul addresses some of the issues the hedonistic and ascetic Corinthians were struggling with. The hedonists believed that to be spiritual they shouldn’t deny themselves anything while the ascetics believed that to be spiritual they should deny themselves all earthly pleasures. Paul corrects them by defining sin throughout 1 Corinthians.…

    C. S. Lewis, in his classic work “Mere Christianity,” describes a basic Christian worldview. A significant theme of the book is on what the issues of morality means for the human race, as well as what morality means in relation to God and to one another. Where does morality come from and how does one become moral? Morality originates with God, Lewis argues, nor can man be truly moral apart from the transforming work of Jesus Christ.…

People always ask ‘If there was a fire, what three items would you save?’ but the truth is, all your experiences and memories will never amount to those three things. In the article “Buy Experiences, Not Things,” James Hamblin uses ethos, logos, and pathos to explore the idea that those who buy experiential things rather than material things are generally happier people. His intended audience is meant to be the younger generation of millenniums. Through his use of these rhetorical devices, he is able to make the argument that buying an experience, such as a vacation or concert, generates more happiness than buying a possession, such as a computer or clothes.…

We have all heard the saying, “Money can’t buy happiness.” But if this is true, why do we devote our lives to the pursuit of wealth? Psychologists, philosophers, and countless others have proposed numerous theories for what factors actually lead to happiness, and whether or not material wealth generates happiness. For example, some believe happiness comes purely from one’s mindset, while others believe behaviors and actions bring about happiness, and some believe a significant portion of happiness is genetic. Nevertheless, experts and ordinary people alike continue to debate the question of how much material wealth contributes to happiness.…

BROTHERS AND SISTERS THIS STORY IS TELLING US THAT IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO BE KIND THAN BEING RIGHT. We may be right to correct and reprimand them if need be, but you wrong because you were not kind. When we think of some Bible story we find Joseph he was right but he showed kindness to his brothers, Boaz was right but showed kindness to Ruth, David was right but showed kindness to Mephibosheth, and I think about our number one example and how throughout His life in this earth he showed kindness to everyone he encounter. “The woman that was caught in adultery, she was toss at Jesus feet and when he starts writing on the sand and her accusers left, “where are your accusers” Jesus ask, neither do I condemned you, go and sin no more.”…

Within most world religions, there is a section of believers that are classified as fundamentalists. Whether it is in Islam, Judaism, or Christianity, fundamentalism shares similar aspects. Fundamentalists stem from conservative cultures and take a defensive position to outside forces, while criticising those they view to be outsiders. Their distrust of society creates a separatist mentality that causes fundamentalist groups to withdraw from modern society. While fundamentalists of various religions share these traits, Christian fundamentalists also have their own unique beliefs.…

Paul says in Galatians 6:7, “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: whatever a man sows that shall he also reap.” As much as many would like to apply this to money and blessings, there is also justifiable application regarding the success or failure of life. Unfortunately however, the misunderstanding lies in the failure to grasp the reality that if one sows little, they will get little. I believe God wants everyone blessed. I also believe that He desires that everyone be successful.…

    1. Motivation is such a big deal when it comes to pursuing a task. I find that the Bhagavad-Gita talks more of motivation than about it. In the selection 2.71, motivation is evident where it says if one is selfless, they shall be free and be with the Lord. This selection actually brings in the topic of selfishness and that being selfish essentially causes one to be trapped and separated from the Lord.…

II. The Sermon on the Mount is not a new law with more rigid commandments than Moses’s law. Therefore, I disagree with the following statement: “Some read the Sermon on the Mount as a new law with more stringent (rigid) commandments than the law taught by Moses.” Jesus said that he didn’t come to bring a new law but to fulfill the old (Mathew 5: 17). There is a historical continuity between the Old Law and the Sermon.…
