Should People Be Judged By Judging People?

People today are so wrapped up in getting as much stuff as fast as they can, that the simple pleasures in life are often overlooked. Bigger houses, fancier cars, the latest smartphone – you name it and people want it. Not just any brand any brand will do either; it must be the name brand of that particular item. But what if there is more to life that just getting stuff? What if the secret of living a full life was in how a person lives his or her life? There are stories all the time of individuals who have won millions of dollars in the lottery, only to file bankruptcy a few years later. Sounds easy enough, but it is much harder than it appears. When a closer look is taken at what is truly meant by do no judge, it is clear that there are many ramifications by judging others. Jesus says that people will be judged according to how they judge others. He could be referring to judgement after a person dies, or he could be referring to what a lot of people call karma. Karma is the belief that how you treat others is how you will be treated in return. Of course thinking about punching someone in the face is not nearly as bad as actually doing it. The point Jesus was making is that thoughts of hate, anger, murder, or lust are the things that make people act a certain way and can eventually lead to carrying out those actions if one is not careful. Just think about the implication and change if people were punished for the evil thoughts they had. If just thinking about stealing something or driving over the speed limit would have the same consequence as actually committing the crime, the crime rate would dramatically decrease. The small crimes such as speeding or illegally parking would still happen, but violent crimes such as murder and rape would mostly be non-existent.
The Sermon on the Mount is probably one of the best known passage of the Bible, and talks about doing “good works” such giving to the poor, fasting, and prayer. To an extent, people do “good works” to make themselves feel good, and sometimes for recognition. However, Jesus taught that doing these things should not be done to gain recognition, but rather out of the goodness of one’s heart. No matter what a person’s belief is, this passage of the Bible also gives good advice on being anxious, how to treat others, retaliation, and loving your enemies.
