The immune system is how the body defends itself against foreign substances and infections. Some individuals experience sensitivities, called allergies, within their immune systems that are caused by ordinarily harmless materials like foods, medicines, or environmental factors (National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease). Food-related allergies continue to grow as a public health issue, as 6% of Canadians under the age of 18 are affected, with peanuts as the leading cause. This lead worried parents to lobby a ban of nuts to the Ministry of Education to ensure the safety and health of their children in school, but this ban is not in the best interests of the general public. It is unrealistic and does not benefit the greatest number of people like the law should, according to philosopher Jeremy Bentham. The ban would cause undue hardship onto schools on the grounds of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms that states that accommodations to the right to equality must be made. The law is also far too drastic, and should embrace the Utilitarian views of John Stuart Mill that urge for a compromise instead in order to achieve happiness on both ends. Peanut free lunches should not be made mandatory by the Ministry of Education for all schools in Ontario through the Education Act of Ontario. Those in support of the …show more content…
The ban would require extensive monitoring of students’ lunches from the staff, cause cafeterias to change their meal plans and completely eradicate any food containing nuts or have ever been in contact with nuts, and would force parents to purchase and make other items that don’t contain peanuts, as well as vigilantly guarding that food to ensure it hasn’t been around nuts. It would be an undue hardship on all parties involved to ban nuts entirely from schools, but schools do have an obligation to protect these allergic children, as clearly stated in the Charter, but it should be done in a reasonable way that does not impose on

Schools are an easy place to change to new regulations about what is healthy to eat and what is unhealthy for children at school. The HHFKA is putting strict regulations on school lunches. Children are starting not to eat lunch at school because children do not like the change that is taking place. Coming from my own experience with school lunches, changing weird and unusual foods that were not normally served in a school lunchroom is tough on the children. I was the child that refused to eat what was being served that day at lunch.…

I believe that kids in Chigago schools should have the privalige to bring in their own lunch, because most kids don't even eat the food they are provided. The text states "Some of the kids don't like the food they give at our school for lunch or breakfast". I believe the parents should be able to control what kids bring in for school lunches, so if the lunch is not good enough, the parents can make the changes they want. Some kids are going hungry at the school because they refuse to eat the school lunch. The text also states "Some parents may want to pick a gluten-free meal for a child, and others may have no problem with a child enjoying a…

It was put in place to raise up a healthier generation of kids. In theory, this seems like a good idea. However, if you take into consideration the amount of wasted food, it’s not worth it. During the 2009-2010 school year, food waste in Minnesota schools made up nearly 24% of all waste produced by the school. This is the highest percentage from one group of waste.…

Around sixty-seven percent of the people across the country believe schools should offer only nutritious drinks, such as white milk, water, and natural fruit juice, to students. I strongly agree that adding nutritious beverages to school lunches is a logical and reasonable idea. To begin with, when products are locally sourced, the local economy around the school will also receive a boost. Also, when a parent of a school student sends their child, or children, to school, they should not have the need to worry about the things that their kid may drink.…

The National School Lunch Program provides students with “healthy” and “nutritional” meals to consume during their lunch period, however, how can a meal that needs to be unwrapped and heated be at all good for us? Most of us don’t know what exactly we are taking into our body. Many students including myself sometimes get ill from these meals. If a healthy and nutritional meal gets you sick then there is something wrong. In order for school lunches to improve we must have an alternative and that is going to our local farmers to receive fresh fruits, vegetables, and meats.…

For students who go to college whether they live on campus or they travel from home to school, most of the time they are in a tight budget where they cannot afford to be buying meals every day. They only can eat what is there in their school. Some campuses do not have lunches and only have vending machines. So what good does that food do to them? Others have only one meal a day which involves eating from the vending machines.…

This article shows how the Hunger-Free Kids Act would force public schools to have strict nutritional standards, with this, “A generation raised on Lunchables and Pizza Hut, the bill’s authors believed, could learn to love whole-wheat pasta and roasted cauliflower” (Confessore 4). Kids will learn to like whatever food is put in front of them. This goes the same way as when I was in elementary school and they told us that pizza is being considered a vegetable, it was commonplace to go along with it, making it harder for young students want to make healthy…

School lunches are an issue that the federal government has taken note of. Last year Michelle Obama implemented a program called “Let’s Move” mandate for healthier foods in schools. In 2014, there is a mandate that all unhealthy non-nutrient meals be taking out of school as well as vending machines with sugary snacks and sugary beverages have been removed. The occasional fundraiser such as bake sales are allowed but when schools don’t comply like in the example of Houston, Texas High Schools they are fined, Huffington Post advised, ”TDA got serious and imposed fines totaling $73,000 on eight Houston high schools for illegal competitive food sales.” After many fines and reports the schools are fined even bigger.…

A morning edition of national public radio, titled, “Lunch Ladies Want Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act to Lighten Up” featured Jean Ronnie, president of the School Nutrition Association. I chose this because Ronnie works directly with schools, lunch ladies and makes a lot of the recipes for school lunch herself. Ronnie described one of the students favorite meals, “Fresh roasted chicken, cornbread that 's homemade, apple kohlrabi slaw and strawberries” that can no longer be served because of the sodium content. This rule among many other restricts snack and meal options for schools and students. I personally love having healthier options to choose from in the vending machines.…

Should Students Have The Right To Chose What They Eat For Lunch? The choice of lunch for students should not be one that is made by someone else, students should have the right to chose what they eat for lunch. A healthy lunch for a growing student is a principal component for the development and growth of a child. There are many components of growth that cannot be changed, but weight and health from choice of food can always be revised. Parents often want the best health for their kids, and sometimes physical activity is not as easy to facilitate, which is why eating healthy is exceedingly important.…

Essentially, healthy school lunches aren’t desirable in a student’s life which makes the student…
