Should Parents Vaccinate Their Children? Vaccinating for common childhood diseases is controversial in today’s society. Many parents are unsure of whether to vaccinate their children and if the vaccinations their children receive are safe and will protect them. Parents should vaccinate their children because, often, vaccines do more good than harm and they do help protect children from dangerous diseases. Children have weaker immune systems than adults and vaccines help keep them safe from many diseases. The common vaccines recommended for children are MMR, which protects against measles and mumps; pertussis, which protects against whooping cough; and polio and varicella, which protects against chickenpox. When a child is 2-6 months old, he/she should get vaccines such as RV, which protects against Rotavirus; DTaP, which protects against diphtheria; Hib, which protects against Haemophilus influenzae type b. For example, polio used to be a deadly disease around the world. A virus in the throat and intestinal tract caused polio. In 1955, a vaccine was created to protect against polio. Since the vaccine has been created, the number of people infected with polio has decreased significantly and, by 1965, only 61 cases of paralytic polio were recorded.
