Should PE Class Be Acquired?

Improved Essays
Did you know in some countries, PE class is optional after a certain age? There are many advantages and disadvantages to the class. It has been a daily part of students lives for years, but has anyone ever considered why? Believe it or not, there are a lot of downsides to PE class, possibly more than benefits. While it is true that children need exercise, should it really be forced? There must be a better way to go about it. People may think PE should be required all throughout a students career because they need the exercise, especially in elementary schools so younger kids can get their energy out. In fact, heart.org says the obesity rate in children in America has nearly tripled since the 1970's, which makes it understandable why people think PE should be necessary. Kids who are less athletic are picked on for they're lesser abilities. This can cause major stress on the student, and can lead kids to skip school out of dread for the class. It would be a lot easier to give these students an option of a class they would feel safer in. Locker rooms is another aspect to the class that students fear. Changing in front of their peers isn't exactly comfortable for everybody. These kids don't belong in gym class if they absolutely dread it. Around fifth grade or middle school, students are becoming more independent. Perhaps around this time they could choose whether or not they'd like to take PE. I'm sure the battle of whether or not the class should be mandatory will go on for years. Both sides of this issue are understandable and valid. PE class could be optional, and everyone could pursue what they really want to do. Because there are many pros and cons, I assume this issue may never be fully resolved. The chances of Physical Education becoming optional are rather slim, but in the meantime, we have the right to share our

First of all,Amy Kaminsky Ex Television Producer states the kids that would be participating in the activities need the physical fitness activities to stay healthy because if the anyone is not healthy then they might have to worry about being healthier later on in life. Another reason that kids need physical activity to stay healthy is because “the kids who are doing the physical activities would be improving their athletic skills and would be increasing their health while doing it”Amy Kaminski states and so a kid who just stays in there house and never goes outside would never increase their athletics and they…

One activity that I would want to add to physical education would be Dodge ball. I want to add it because I think it is a good game, and I think that many other students in our school enjoy it too. If we were able to vote, in physical education, I think that many students would choose to add Dodge ball. The thing about Dodge ball that I think people enjoy is the friendly competition and facing off against their friends to see who wins. I think almost everyone can agree they enjoy a short friendly game of dodgeball.…

In Dodgeball this would help others gain confidence and stand up for themselves. No one wants to be the kid that gets hit. While playing the teachers need to teach children that it is only a fun activity and not a war zone. According to of The Weak Shall Inherit the Gym,“Then their kids will stumble out into the bright light of the real world and find out that, yes, there’s weak and there’s strong and teams and sides and winning and losing.” This is telling us that if we shelter our children then they will have no idea what the real world is like.…

Have you noticed that Physical Education seems to be a narrowing field? I strongly believe that there is a reason we need to keep PE in schools and in society today. Unfortunately, I feel as though many of the educators and teachers today aren’t taking it seriously. They aren’t doing enough to help the students become physically active, instead, the teachers just sit there because it is a job to them, nothing more. If the teachers had a better personal philosophy on what they actually want to teach, then I feel like PE would be a much stronger field and everyone would want it around.…

It is very easy to take a side that wants the government to control what a child does at school because that is the only way we know that the children are in good hands when they get dropped off. Sending an eight-year-old child to school where they can choose to only eat French fries and ice cream is not the ideal situation, but that is where they must be taught to pick the healthy options too. Also, some people might argue that the fifty minutes to an hour of physical activity that students have in school might be the only exercise that they will get all day, but again I believe that it is the parent 's responsibility to get the child outside not the governments. I don’t think that physical education should be taken out of schools, but I do think that it should be more about having fun and taking a break from learning, and less about having physical tests to see who is out of shape. My little sister, Delani, is in eighth grade and has tried almost every kind of sport like dance, competitive swimming, and fencing but it turns out that sports are not something she loves to do.…

An athlete is carrying a heavy and bulky lacrosse bag full of gear for his after school club team, and is dreading the idea of dressing out for Their gym class in 3rd hour. Athletes shouldn’t have to take PE because they are already doing moderate or vigorous training for 1 or more hours. Athletes should not have to take PE because they could use the extra hour for another class or getting homework done, they could also get hurt in PE which would not allow them to play in their own sports. One reason student athletes should not have mandated PE is they could use that hour for other studies or to finish homework.…

In addition, the article, “How Finland Keeps Kids Focused Through Free Play” by Timothy D. Walker, states, “During these times [recess], they not only rest and recharge—they also learn to cooperate, communicate, and compromise, all skills they need to succeed academically as well as in life.” These social skills learned during recess are important because they can only be learned through free play, not structured activities. To illustrate, the article, “Middle School Recess”, states, “Many social graces are learned on the playground. While Physical Education classes provide a sequential and developmental instructional program for physical fitness, recess allows children to play, make up rules and have choices.” Therefore, despite the fact that Physical Education classes provide similar health benefits as recess, PE is not a true replacement for recess because other social skills can only be learned during unstructured play time, not scheduled exercise.…

Public schools are all about “equal opportunity.” This means that no matter what, everyone receives that same amount of opportunity. Yes, club sports - that is, private leagues outside of school - would be a option for some, but fees, equipment, and travel expenses can add up to thousands of dollars per season. Many parents can’t afford that for their kids. Schools should keep their athletic programs running because many kids would not be able to play sports without…
