The United States of America is the ninth fattest country, 33.9 percent of people being overweight. Schools should provide healthier food for students at lunch time. According to the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, from the years 2000 to 2004, data shows, “Among children ages 6 to 11, overweight increased from 15.1 percent to 18.8 percent” (Statistics of Overweight). However, the School Health Education Evaluation study found that from 35 to 50 hours of specific health education were required to bring out changes in targeted attitudes and behaviors” (Why and how). Schools should educate children about nutrition frequently. There are many negative consequences that come from being overweight. For example, “Obesity related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer, some of the leading causes of preventable death” (Overweight and Obesity). Obesity is not a healthy way of life for sure. Portion control can be an issue for a lot of people. Michael Pollan states, “Researchers have found that people (and animals) will eat up to 30 percent more if they are given larger portions” (Pollan and Chevat 82). In that case, the class wouldn’t be able to be held every week. But what really matters is making eating healthy a lifestyle. Pollan says, “Is your school teaching you how to be a lifelong fast-food junkie? Or is it teaching you the importance, and the pleasure, of eating real food at real meals? (Pollan and Chevat 283).
