Should Fathers Get Equal Family Leave?
In the actual generation, both men and women not only tend to share parental roles equally but also work hard and thrive in their careers at the same time. At the workplace, fathers are excluded from paid time off for parental leave just because employers believe that women are primarily responsible for the housework. Thus, providing new fathers with the same paid leave given to women is not a request that should be accepted. Family plays an important role in society and companies should offer the best regulations for parental leave which would apply to all parents regardless of gender. These policies will bring benefits to the companies and society as a whole. In a recent research by Boston College, the results show that fathers take only one day of leave while mothers take at least one month of leave. Taking care and getting involved in our children’s development is more meaningful than just discussing whether which responsibility should be shouldered by the mother or father. There are so many misconceptions held by people about family-work balance. In most of the cases, the majority insist that childcare job is much more likely taken up by the mother rather than the father. Moreover, fathers do not do the breastfeeding part which is crucial for a newborn. Women are the ones who have to stay at home and look after their children. In her book “Reshaping the Work Family Debate,” Joan Williams pointed out that men, who usually admit responsibility for their role as fathers, tend to be stigmatized at work most of the time.
