Should Mars Be Colonized?

Mars, a planet that contains the possibility of allowing humans to live somewhere other than earth. However, this can lead to multiple questions as with the colonization of Mars will also lead to the beginning of a completely new society. This idea of a new martian society, will lead to questions about what laws, clocks, and calendars should this new Martian society use. Additionally, with the colonization of Mars also comes the concern of unknown diseases and illness that comes from living in a new planet. This concern of Martian contamination and other biological complications have led some to believe that Mars shouldn’t be colonized. However, we should colonize Mars as we must continue the human legacy, as well as essentially secure the …show more content…
During this speech, Clinton discusses the discovery of a meteorite that was 13,000 years ago and contained fossilized Martian bacteria “Appropriately, it was the first rock to be picked up that year -- rock number 84001. Today, rock 84001 speaks to us across all those billions of years and millions of miles. It speaks of the possibility of life. If this discovery is confirmed, it will surely be one of the most stunning insights into our universe that science has ever uncovered. Its implications are as far-reaching and awe-inspiring as can be imagined. Even as it promises answers to some of our oldest questions, it poses still others even more fundamental.” Despite Clinton’s speech about the fossilized bacteria, the public’s interest in Mars was essentially nonexistent. No questions or concerns about the idea of turning mars into another place for humans to live on. Although, questions and concerns did begin to emerge in 2012 when a company from the Netherlands, that goes by the name of Mars One. Stated that they planned on sending people to Mars by the year 2023. Mars One essentially kick started the idea mars colonization, they also began to let those who believe that Mars should not be colonize to have a larger audience to voice their reasoning. One of these reasons as to why they believe that mars shouldn't be colonized is the risk …show more content…
Nasa feared that one of the crew members may have carried some kind of moon pathogen that could end up killing millions. Despite Nasa’s precaution, it was later revealed by one of Apollo 11’s crew members Buzz Aldrin that there were ants and cracks in the quaterine chamber. Thankfully, the crew didn’t contract any form of moon pathogens. As it should be since there is no life on the moon. However, the risk of astronauts going to Mars and contacting some horrible disease is a very real possibility. Additionally, there is also a risk of astronauts bringing bacteria from Earth that can be absolutely devastating to the native life on Mars. The concern for planetary infection is so great that it has led to a group of scientist, that has members across the globe, that actively warns the dangers of planetary infection. The name of this group is called the International Committee Against Mars Sample Return (ICAMSR) Despite the claims made by ICAMSR, Nasa has created multiple measures to ensure that the risk of cross planetary infection are drastically reduced. One of these precautions to reduce the risk of cross planetary infection is the The Coleman-Sagan equation. This equation ensures that the probability of infecting mars with microorganism from earth to be one in ten thousand. This equation may even become irrelevant as we continue to understand the

Many people have dreamed of traveling to another planet. Since the technology is there, the clock is ticking for the day the announcement is made that a spaceship is making its way to Mars. Most people do not think about what will happen once there are people on Mars, however, and what they will do then. Survival and living a sufficient life away from the civilization on Earth are common things one might think of. “The Coming Schism” by James E. and Alcestis R. Oberg explores what will happen when people finally colonize Mars. The Obergs make assumptions according to what they believe will be the future for not only the people on Mars but also for the people on Earth. The Obergs persuade their audience that not only is it inevitable for people…

Unbelievable! In the year of 2022, humans will be living on the red planet, Mars. Mars One is a program whose goal is to set up a permanent human colony on Mars. Although, this is an exciting idea, it is not practical and is likely to fail; for instance, Mars One doesn’t have the right technology, not enough money, and their plan is too generalized and nonspecific.…

While the idea of living on Mars is exciting, it’s not necessarily ideal. Lisa Grossman’s article “SpaceX Mars Plan is Clever but Unconvincing” presents a stronger argument than Eric Betz’s article “The Falcon has Landed. Now SpaceX is Eyeing Mars” because overall, Grossman’s has more authority, is more logical, and uses better examples. 2…

As technology advances, we see space exploration continue to grow further and further. Many attempts to send rovers to Mars have gave scientists greater knowledge about the planet and a consideration of sending people there to colonize the planet in the near future. On April 15, 2010 President Obama stated by the 2030s we should have enough information to send people to the orbit of Mars and bring be able to bring them home safely. “ I think of NASA is going to continue in the business of human spaceflight, then it definitely needs a destination” (Greg Klerkx). The support for the Mars One project is huge and has to overcome three problems to make the plan a success. The cost, the value it gives scientists, and the danger are the problems…

Space exploration is the ongoing investigation of the environment beyond Earth's atmosphere. Mars is the fourth planet from the sun in our solar system that could possibly contain life. It contains many unknown things to discover and could overall greatly advance humanity. It is greatly debatable whether the United States should expand our space exploration to Mars for many reasons. The United States should not lead a mission to send humans to Mars since it would be too costly, take an exessive amount of time to carry out, and it would be overall too dangerous.…

You know what else is necessary? Mars colonization. This is funny, isn’t it? According to NASA Administrator Charles Bolden “And so if this species is to survive indefinitely, we need to become a multi-planet species. So one reason we need to go to Mars is so we can learn a little about living on another planet, so when Mikaley, my granddaughter, is ready to move out of the solar system we’ll know a lot more about living away from this planet than we know today.” How ridiculous is this? Don't get me wrong, I’m very interested in space exploration and find it breathtaking, but some people just have all the wrong reasons for becoming multi- planet species. Even if we manages to find a way to colonize other planets it wouldn’t be for everyone. Elon Musk estimated that one way trip to Mars would cost approximately ten billion dollars per person. Only 130 people would be able to afford it, Elon Musk being one of them. At the 67th Nation Astronautical Congress Elon Musk said the following: “I think there are really two fundamental paths. History is going to bifurcate along two directions. One path is we stay on Earth forever and then there will be some eventual extinction event. I don't have an immediate doomsday prophecy, but eventually history suggests there will be some doomsday event. The alternative is to become a space-faring civilization and a multi planet species, which I hope you agree that is the right way to go.”…

There are so many things that we as humans don’t know. The potential scientific discoveries from Mars could help us build in the future and learn about the past. Mars is older than Earth. That makes geologists be able to learn even more how planets developed. The trip of humans going to Mars can give us more knowledge and experience on long space travel. The colonization of Mars could give us the power we need to keep our species alive if need be. Thus, Mars has a lot of scientific…

Mars, and even its surrounding asteroids, are brimming with resources from metals – such as gold, silver, and platinum (NASA) – to gases – such as deuterium, a natural gas not abundantly found on earth, which has the capability to produce a copious amount of energy (NASA). These natural resources provide an immediate reason to attempt to make meaningful contact with Mars as they could be used on Earth; they are also an economically viable buffer as we spend time attempting to colonize the planet. Zubrin, believes that Mars is “singular in that is possesses all the raw materials required to support not only life, but a new branch of human civilization”…
