Should Mars Be Colonized?

Mars, a planet that contains the possibility of allowing humans to live somewhere other than earth. However, this can lead to multiple questions as with the colonization of Mars will also lead to the beginning of a completely new society. This idea of a new martian society, will lead to questions about what laws, clocks, and calendars should this new Martian society use. Additionally, with the colonization of Mars also comes the concern of unknown diseases and illness that comes from living in a new planet. This concern of Martian contamination and other biological complications have led some to believe that Mars shouldn’t be colonized. However, we should colonize Mars as we must continue the human legacy, as well as essentially secure the …show more content…
During this speech, Clinton discusses the discovery of a meteorite that was 13,000 years ago and contained fossilized Martian bacteria “Appropriately, it was the first rock to be picked up that year -- rock number 84001. Today, rock 84001 speaks to us across all those billions of years and millions of miles. It speaks of the possibility of life. If this discovery is confirmed, it will surely be one of the most stunning insights into our universe that science has ever uncovered. Its implications are as far-reaching and awe-inspiring as can be imagined. Even as it promises answers to some of our oldest questions, it poses still others even more fundamental.” Despite Clinton’s speech about the fossilized bacteria, the public’s interest in Mars was essentially nonexistent. No questions or concerns about the idea of turning mars into another place for humans to live on. Although, questions and concerns did begin to emerge in 2012 when a company from the Netherlands, that goes by the name of Mars One. Stated that they planned on sending people to Mars by the year 2023. Mars One essentially kick started the idea mars colonization, they also began to let those who believe that Mars should not be colonize to have a larger audience to voice their reasoning. One of these reasons as to why they believe that mars shouldn't be colonized is the risk …show more content…
Nasa feared that one of the crew members may have carried some kind of moon pathogen that could end up killing millions. Despite Nasa’s precaution, it was later revealed by one of Apollo 11’s crew members Buzz Aldrin that there were ants and cracks in the quaterine chamber. Thankfully, the crew didn’t contract any form of moon pathogens. As it should be since there is no life on the moon. However, the risk of astronauts going to Mars and contacting some horrible disease is a very real possibility. Additionally, there is also a risk of astronauts bringing bacteria from Earth that can be absolutely devastating to the native life on Mars. The concern for planetary infection is so great that it has led to a group of scientist, that has members across the globe, that actively warns the dangers of planetary infection. The name of this group is called the International Committee Against Mars Sample Return (ICAMSR) Despite the claims made by ICAMSR, Nasa has created multiple measures to ensure that the risk of cross planetary infection are drastically reduced. One of these precautions to reduce the risk of cross planetary infection is the The Coleman-Sagan equation. This equation ensures that the probability of infecting mars with microorganism from earth to be one in ten thousand. This equation may even become irrelevant as we continue to understand the

One last reason why people shouldn’t go to Mars is because there are so many risks of Death in atmospheric pressure, temperature, and common casualties such as sickness or even as simple as a suit ripping. These can also be fatal because the pressure is so different there that anyone would die in seconds if something went wrong and their body met the outside air. The temperature also gets as low as 150°C which would cause death by freezing but a human would die by the pressure way before freezing. Let alone all of these horrible casualties, there would also be extreme boredom because all day people would do chores, go to the bathroom, and then conduct research. These are only a few of the many reasons of why not to waste time going to…

Most people do not think about what will happen once there are people on Mars, however, and what they will do then. Survival and living a sufficient life away from the civilization on Earth are common things one might think of. “The Coming Schism” by James E. and Alcestis R. On August 5, after a journey lasting more than 8 months, a carlike rover carefully settled down onto the surface of Mars. The vehicle is basically a science lab. Its mission: to search for evidence that the Red Planet might once have hosted life — even if the organisms were only one-celled microbes. The first stage of this mission — the landing — is “an amazing achievement,” observes Charles Bolden.…

As Americans we seem to crave the exposure of being the greatest country,so of course patriotism plays a huge role in deciding if we should continue our space program. When an American sees a picture of a rocket making its heroic blast off from the launch pad, a sense of pride and love and honor for our country fills us(Photo). This undeniable gratification must be stated as an issue; millions of Americans lust for space travel and want to glimpse the unknown. In consideration that astronauts are traveling into a unknown world filled with possibilities, the idea of space contamination troubles our safety and well being. Acknowledging the issue of “some infectious extraterrestrial germ” entering our world, it arises the question of why we have…

Krauthammer overlooks the risks of traveling to the moon and does not speak of those hazards that could possibly put someone's life in danger. He only talks about the United States trying to “ground” us to Earth, yet the United States do not want to be held responsible for innocent life. Not only is there technology risks, there is a factor of human error. Technology is only as good as what humans set it up to be so, for example, everything has to be has to be set up and entered by humans in technology, but if someone was to enter data wrong the whole mission would be doomed. Instead of going to the moon, where we have been several times, why not try to travel somewhere else we could possibly sustain life like Mars.…

    Mars Colony Essay

Attempting to establish a colony on Mars is a costly and research intensive endeavour. It will take a very special group of people to travel to Mars and spend their whole lives there. These volunteers will need to be very well trained. It will also take a lot of resources to sustain this colony, especially in its early days. If the target of 2025, which is only eleven years away, is to be met, a very large expenditure will need to be made on research due to our very limited understanding of how our bodies react to zero gravity and a far lower atmospheric pressure.…

A quote from a former president said "We choose to go to the Moon, not because it is easy, but because it is hard” (John F. Kennedy). The quote from John F.
