Should Marijuana Be Made Legal Essay

Should marijuana be made legal? That is the question many Americans have attempted to answer in the past and continue to debate in our society today. In the past few years, a few signs have suggested that Americans’ attitudes toward marijuana legalization might be changing. For instance, both Washington and Colorado have legalized the use of marijuana, while other states are considering taking this step in the near future (e.g., California). In California, medical marijuana use is legal; however, at the federal level marijuana use is still illegal. On the other hand, our current president Barack Obama has mentioned that as a young person he had smoked marijuana. In our society drugs, including alcohol, cigarettes, and coffee are legal for use. Why are some drugs sociably more acceptable than others? The purpose of this paper is not to answer if marijuana should be made legal or not, but to find out whether age or political view has an effect on whether marijuana should be made legal. It is important to investigate the marijuana issue because as mentioned earlier, there is a double standard about certain drugs in our society.
