Over the years, America’s War on Drugs has primarily focused on the controversial drug marijuana and whether it should be legalized or not. Marijuana is an illegal drug and it is one of the most widely used drugs around. Legalization of marijuana will provide medical, social, and economic benefits and help the growth and stability of America today. Fifty-eight percent of Americans agree that marijuana should be legalized versus a poll done in 1969, with only twelve percent in favor. The reason for its favorability could be that thirty-eight percent admit to having tried marijuana. As the drug marijuana becomes more popular, it increases its social acceptance as well. Marijuana brings pain relief to millions of people. It has been known to help treat AIDs, cancer, arthritis, migraines, glaucoma, back pain, and inflammation. While Marijuana is effective as a medicine, it is also extremely lucrative. If the drug is taxed and regulated it could benefit both the states and municipalities. However upon legalization the economy would experience an immediate influx. Legalization of Marijuana would also drastically reduce crime in our cities and form a more productive society through its positive uses. Despite plenty of speculations about the drug, the benefits that marijuana brings to the table definitely out way its disadvantages.
