Keeping so many people in prison for most likely stupid drug offenses is sad because a large number of these prisoners are marijuana users. Keeping prisoners for drug offenses (marijuana) is a huge waste of taxpayer money, because the government is spending a large amount of money to put away people who did something legal in multiple states. To keep a person in prison costs about $31,000 for a year, and prisons are slowly filling up with more and more inmates for stupid offenses like possession of marijuana, even though some people think these marijuana users deserve to be in prison. This may be true, but nobody should be arrested for possessing a small amount of pot. Criminalizing drugs does not prevent people from using drugs that make them feel “good” while high. Prohibition is a largely ineffective system, the prohibition of alcohol lasted until it dramatically failed. Other countries like the Netherlands do not arrest people for possession of drugs. Instead, they offer treatment centers for drug addicts. Drug use in Amsterdam is lower than America, and America has much more violence and people in jail (DrugWarFacts). Many convicts are being released for marijuana related crimes as the states change their laws anyway, so the time for change is …show more content…
In multiple polls done, usually around sixty percent of the country supports the legalization of marijuana (Prospect). Since this is the case, the legalization is harder to understand by the sixty percent of Americans who support marijuana rather than the non-supporters, but soon the non-supporters will realize the benefits of the drug. States like Colorado and Oregon have shown there is lots of money involved in the cannabis industry. Colorado alone generated $70 million just in tax money (Basu). That is over three times the amount of tax money made from alcohol in Colorado. Since $70 million of tax revenue was generated in one year in one state, it is clear that cannabis is a multi-billion-dollar industry. It has the potential to create millions of jobs in the country and creates extreme amounts of revenue and economy stimulation. Instead of paying to lock up marijuana users, the government should legalize marijuana and experience each state making large amounts of tax money. This would help balance our budget and put an end the national
