Although there is much skepticism about the legalization of marijuana, countries and states that have already legalized it are shutting down these concerns. Colorado has pulled in a vast amount of money since the legalization of marijuana in the state. Harry Bradford from The Huffington Post states, “In 2011, Colorado reeled in $5 million in sales taxes from medical marijuana businesses”(Bradford). Opening new businesses typically creates debt, but marijuana is so popular amongst various groups of people, that it can only expand and create more jobs and open in more locations. Bradford continues and writes that the United States government could “save an estimated $13.7 billion” on prohibition enforcement costs and tax revenue if the drug is legalized nationwide. Marijuana can be used for more than just personal and medicinal use. Dale Gieringer asserts that legalizing cannabis would create many subsidiary industries such as coffee houses and other paraphernalia. He writes, “The city of Amsterdam, who has legalized marijuana, brands about three hundred coffee houses that retail in cannabis”(Gieringer). Gieringer continues, “The legalization of cannabis would also permit the agriculture of hemp, a versatile source of fiber, protein, and oil, which was once one of America’s top crops”(Gieringer).
