Marijuana, also known as cannabis, weed, pot, grass, and bud has become a huge part of society within the past few years. One in three people in America have tried smoking marijuana at one point in their lives. This debate over legalizing marijuana has been going on for quite some time, but it is recently more intense than ever. In 1969, only 12% of our population supported legalizing marijuana. Today, a majority of Americans support the legalization for recreational use. Meanwhile a majority of states in the U.S. have legalized cannabis for medicinal purposes. Cancer patients that are battling with chemotherapy, struggle from painful side effects like nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite. These side effects often cause more health complications for people already battling with cancer. With the help of medical marijuana, these painful side effects can be drastically reduced, and also reduce the hardship of chemotherapy. If marijuana can help reduce these side effects and make chemotherapy a better experience by decreasing nausea, alleviating pain, and stimulating the appetite. Marijuana can also be used to treat and prevent an eye disease glaucoma. Glaucoma brings increased pressure in the eyeball causing damage to the optic nerve which ultimately leads to loss of vision. Robert J. DeLorenzo from Virginia Commonwealth University, performed a study in which he gave marijuana extract to epileptic rats. This study led to the conclusion that marijuana extract stopped the rats from having seizures for about 10 hours. Another study in 2006 led by Kim Janda supports the idea that marijuana can also slow the progression of alzheimer 's disease, which currently has no cure. Studies have also shown that the all natural plant can treat glaucoma, relieve arthritis, control epileptic seizures, help with Crohn 's disease, and help people struggling with PTSD.
