Why Is Marijuana Legalized In The United States?

On average, how many times do innocent bystanders inhale secondhand smoke in their lifetime? Little do most people know; secondhand smoke has been proven to be more dangerous than smoking a cigarette. The number of deaths caused by cancer, due to tobacco products, increases each year in the United States. Along with tobacco products, alcohol is another major cause of casualties and injuries due to alcohol abuse every year. There are several proven debates that suggest more Americans abuse alcohol than they do marijuana. So, why is marijuana illegal in the United States? Alcohol and tobacco products are still legal and the cause of numerous deaths yearly. Marijuana is “a common street and recreational drug that comes from the marijuana plant: the hemp plant cannabis sativa” (“Marijuana” 2015). There are a few more states in the process of trying to legalize marijuana. With the number of states legalizing marijuana rising, in the future, there is a chance of all fifty states allowing the use of marijuana legally. There are numerous ways marijuana can help our country and economy if it were to be legalized. Crime rate, job opportunities, and medical use just being a few important areas that will improve dramatically with legalizing marijuana.
With the pros being very abundant and the cons being slim, why is our country having trouble with the debate on legalizing marijuana?
