Some people believe that walking around a field while playing notes through an instrument doesn’t use prowess or energy. Some simply believe it’s just not “sport like.” Jerod Smith, (2015) band director at Granville High School said in an interview “I believe that it is as athletic as many sports but that it is not actually a sport”(Smith). Physical examinations are used by all sports including football, track and field, volleyball, and soccer. Physicals are used to certify that it is safe for an athlete to participate in physical activity. An article by Anthony Saglimbeni says “The goal is to ensure, as completely and accurately as possible, that an athlete with a specific medical condition can compete safely”(Saglimbeni, paragraph 7). It’s very important that an athlete is completely healthy before competing in order to reduce risk of serious injury. Some say marching band is not a dangerous sport therefore it should not require athletes to complete a physical examination, but marching band can be dangerous. Common injuries in marching band include rolled ankles, sprained joints, sore muscles, neck injuries, and even concussions.
