Benefits Of Mandatory Volunteering

The average teenager spends nine hours a day using media. Whether it’s texting, watching television, or on social media sites, they’re devoting the same amount of time using media devices than the amount of time they are at school. Faced with a statistic like that, I think we can all agree that the teenagers who will soon be entering into the workforce need to be focusing their energy on more important work. We have placed so much emphasis on materialistic items that we’ve gotten away from what’s important. Giving back to the community is one of the most gratifying and self-fulfilling experiences that one can have. When we have teenagers who waste so much time on media devices, why shouldn’t mandatory volunteering be implemented so that our children can have more meaningful experiences? These students are realizing how important it is and how fulfilling it can be to give back to the community. Most students don’t think about volunteering and what they can gain from it which is why I think this should be implemented. The Port Washington superintendent Geoffrey N. Gordon said, “Everything today is about what kids get, toys and computers, and in school it’s important to teach what students can give.” The object of traditional schools is to provide students with valuable and enriching learning experiences. To exclude such a great learning experience such as volunteering deprives students of treasured and rewarding lessons. Having enough time is an issue that everyone faces. Students have to worry about homework, groups they may be apart of, and events that they want to attend but when something becomes a priority you will always find the time.
