Should Legal Drinking Age Be Lowered?

The legal drinking age have always been a controversial subject to speak on.The current requirement of age to drink is as meaningless as a door that leads to nowhere. Many believe the current law is contradictory. The age restriction have also been proven to have no impact on society. The creation of this law have increased needless amounts of convictions due to drinking. Thus, the current legal drinking age should be lowered. Firstly, many citizens believe the current law is contradictory when compared against what is politically acceptable. Politically, it is unanimously acceptable that 18 year olds can be tried as adults when they commit crimes, to legally get jobs, and to get married. ABC news reported several laws that Illinois have erected in 2016 that included law HB 3234 that states, “The age requirement for a youth hunting license from 16 and under to 19 and under (or until the youth wants to hunt by himself or herself)” . Then there’s law HB 3718 that introduces the Juvenile Justice Reform that states ,” raising from 15 to 16 the age at which juveniles charged with the most serious crimes must be tried as adults.” There’s …show more content…
However, it’s impossible to ignore the fact that law is contradictory. The age restriction consistently fail it’s goal to impact society, even though this restriction have been ongoing since 1984. Lastly, this meaningless law have led to more convictions that deal with alcohol consumption. If the system wasn’t so flawed, more people would be obliged to agree with it; however, this law is completely unjust towards the youth. There’s no excuse for the government to declare what’s good for it’s citizens when, at the end of the day, a drunk driving “minor” is just as capable of taking a life as a drunk driving “adult”.
