Should Kids Have Social Media

Decent Essays
I believe that social media shouldn’t be open for kids to have. There are many different kinds of social media. For example, Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. I have thought of many different reasons for this subject. Lots of people use social media and love it so much that problems start. These problems happen very often when dealing with social media.

One reason I don’t think kids should have social media, is their lack of spelling. Lack of spelling is a problem on social media where most kids use short ways of saying words. One example is when Jaylee texts me she puts “WRYD” instead of what are you doing. Another example is when Holley texts me the word “whatever”, with no punctuation, I don’t know if she is mad or careless.

As a teenager myself, I agree, and I believe that many of my peers would agree as well. Social media has become an outlet for many teens, as youth today seem to be more aware of major world issues than in the past generations of teens, in which we get to voice our opinions about subjects that are considered too “taboo” to talk about with our elders. Many guardians share concern for their children becoming too distinct from them and try to force…

However, by focusing on the way the “supposedly” positive effects that these children and teens experience by using these social media sites, the authors overlooks the deeper problem of these social networks. The point is that by meeting new people online and having a relationship with them, without actually knowing who they are, is like inviting predators to harm you, or invade your privacy, cyber-bullying, as well as identity theft to your person. With the advent of cell phones and instant messaging, one could have had concerns with how young children and teens began using a lot of shorthand abbreviations and slang in their messages. Parents and educators alike could see that this not only could make children and teens lazy, but could also affect their literacy skills in the future, writing papers and long essays.
