Should Divorce be Harder? The media in the twenty-first century often portray divorce as a new and modern phenomenon. However, this portrayal of divorce is not accurate because divorce has existed ever since bad marriages started existing. The only new thing about divorce in the world of today is the way it is orchestrated. Since divorce is not a new concept, someone may wonder what a divorce is and what its causes and effects on the lives of individuals. The Oxford Dictionary defines divorce as the dissolution of a marriage legally by a competent body or a court of law. According to Clarke-Stewart and Brentano (2007), long ago divorce was one 's decision made by themselves and not any legal body or religion. This happens because it is easier to get a divorce in the country. The states that have the lowest number of divorce have policies that discourage divorce and makes it harder to obtain. Such policies include longer waiting between 18 and 24 months (Howe 411). If such policies are put in place, people get discouraged by the long tiring process of divorce and resort to solving their differences instead. This can help salvage marriages that were to end without concrete reasons or reasons that could be solved. However, Riley (1991) claims that when such policies are put in place and divorce made hard to get, people will start making their family lives hard and look for good reasons why they should get divorce. Even though divorce can harm children, not carrying out a divorce procedure can also be destructive. Restricting divorce leads to domestic violence, infidelity, cruelty to one’s spouses, and some even resort to abandoning their families (Howe
