Citizens in America often look down on immigrants. In the New York Times article, “Families Can Crumble Under Deportation Threat”, the author discusses how Ecuadorian immigrant Sara Martinez lives a life of poverty (1). Martinez is forced to work at a low-paying job that doesn’t require her to show her papers (Families 7). However, Martinez actually graduated at the top of her high school class and earned a degree in business administration (Families 16). In Julia Preston’s article “Amid Study Deportation, Fear and Worry Multiply Among Immigrants”, it states that deportations are separating unauthorized immigrants from family members here legally (6). Parents are taken from their children, or live in constant fear of being deported (Preston 6). Undocumented immigrants don’t deserve to be taken away from their families just because they’re undocumented. Children of undocumented immigrants shouldn’t have to grow up without their parents. The article also explained how “the lines are becoming harder to draw between high-priority violators and those with strong family ties” (Preston 6). Even though the government doesn’t want to separate families, that doesn’t stop them from deporting undocumented immigrants. Families should not be torn apart just because someone is living here
