The importance of homework is a huge debate among elementary schools. Homework committees have been formed to determine whether or not it is beneficial to students. These committees have done research in multiple countries, such as China, Japan, and the United States. Studies have discovered "there is no correlation between time spent on studying and academic achievement" (Sorrentino). Banning homework would allow children more time with their families, while promoting physical and mental health. Giving elementary students homework is not only a burden on the child, but also on the parent. Although this number may seem small in comparison to the rest of the population, this does not include children dealing with depression who have not been diagnosed yet. Homework can be stressful. Completing homework and as well as getting daily tasks done can be overbearing on a child’s mental health. If this stress is given the opportunity to build, the results from this stress can be bad and potentially fatal. "Depression is significantly more common in boys under age 10. But by age 16, girls have a greater incidence of depression" ("Depression"). Not only does depression have the power to take away an individual’s peace of mind, it also has the ability to make one physically sick. Stomach ulcers, graying of hair, acne, and the formation of bad habits, are just a few of the many side effects of depression. Bad habits are formed when people are searching for a way to cope with situations. Some people bite their nails or play with their hair excessively, begin the use of drugs and alcohol, and some even use self-harm. From the outside looking in, none of this makes sense, but it makes perfect sense to those who struggle with it daily.
