Should High School Start Later Research

Did you get up this morning feeling fully rested and ready to come to school to start the day? For most teenagers the answer is no. Is this because students are lazy? No it’s because of school start times. Many young students need and want school to start later and it is for the better. Schools starting later means students get more sleep, with more sleep they have a healthier life. It also means students have more time doing tasks in the morning. Unfortunately high school students need to wake up at around seven o’clock each morning for five years because of early school start times.
A teenager needs a lot of sleep. If a teenager doesn't get enough sleep they are really moody during the day and their body performance is lowered. Experts say that on average teenagers need between nine and nine and a half hours sleep. Frankly many students don’t get close to that much sleep. A survey was done on 30 year 11 students and only two out of the thirty students got nine hours sleep. In

Students who have slept long enough have higher concentration rates. If the student is awake and is concentrating they will learn much more getting them better grades. If the students had extra time in the morning they can have time to eat a good breakfast which will improve their thinking throughout the day. They will also not be rushed to get out of the house, they will have time to gather all their books and maybe even finish off some homework. Attendance rates will be much higher because sometimes students don’t come to school because they slept in. Researchers analysed data from more than 9,000 students at eight high schools in Minnesota, Colorado, and Wyoming and found that shifting the school day later in the morning resulted in a boost in attendance, test scores, and grades in English, math, science, and social studies.
