Should High School Be Extended To Five Years Essay

Educators debate extending high school to five years, due to increasing demands on students from employers and colleges to participate in extracurricular activities, community service, and maintain high grades. Personally, I do not believe that high school should be extended to five years. My reasoning for my position is it would increase drop out rate, the students would not enjoy being in high school for an extra year and want to start living as an adult, and I do all of this in the four year period. The first reason I believe high school should not be extended to five years is that it would increase drop out rate. As of right now, there is a good amount of kids that already drop out of high school before the four years are up. Extending high school one more year would not help this circumstance. Many kids that do drop out, do it for several different reasons. One of these reasonings may be that they get bored of it, and lose all interest in going at all. If an extra year was put into high school, it would cause many people to drop out their fourth year, or even earlier. If we already have problems keeping kids in school for four years without them dropping out, how would adding an extra year to …show more content…
Personally, I do not believe school should be something that the students dread going to. Another year added on to high school may result in pupils not wanting to go at all. By the end of the fourth year in high school as of right now, students show interest and are ready to go on to college, to further their knowledge, get through college sooner, and go into the workforce to make decent money, living their adult life. If another year was added in high school, you would not be able to start living as an adult quite yet, and have to spend another year and a half in high school, graduating at nineteen or

If students are not learning in a traditional school year, it is up to the adults to find ways to help them graduation. A year round school system may just be what the students need. Without an education the children have not hope of a future. Education needs to be made a priority for all those involved in our children 's lives. I think trying a year round school is the only way we can see if it will work, it is better than doing nothing and leaving things the way they are now.…

There should not be year-round schools due to the many drawbacks for students, as well as the school itself. The downfalls of year round schools involve time, cost and the development of students. Consequently, there are risks of students not growing as healthy as a child with extended time off. Also, the scheduling for families and out of school activities will be harder to plan and have to be changed because of an extended year. The students and their families will not only be affected by the prolonged school year.…

If school is all year round there will be drastic changes in the american lifestyle. For example school being all year round would be a problem for children because year round school will not give students enough family time. This is the case because sometimes parents like to take a vacation, or a break once in awhile. Therefore the government should let schools have a break during the school year so that children can have time to spend with family and friends. There are many more problems such as parents would have to make scheduling adjustments, and year round school won’t give students enough time to spend with family and friends, and year round school would cost more money.…

In some schools across America, students have been graduating one year early. This has sparked a debate whether it is a good idea or not. Students should have the ability to graduate early if they are capable and willing. Studies have shown that those who drop out of high school are much more likely to be incarcerated than those with a high school diploma or a college degree. Blacks suffer the most with 37 of them who drop out ending up going to prison. The problem with the education system is that it does provide equal education for everyone across the country. Some school districts don’t get enough state funds or use those funds improperly (because they are given block grants allowing them to do what they want with the money) giving students in those school districts a poor quality of education. There is a direct correlation between the qualities of education school…

Who would like to give up their summer vacation and all of their free time? If students choose to graduate high school in three years rather than four, they would have to give up all of their free time and summer vacation. If students graduate high school a year early and go to college the following year they will miss out on the full high school experience because they would have no free time, they would not have any electives, and they would not be able to have a social life. Students should not choose to graduate high school a year early because their high school years would be a lot less enjoyable than they are meant to be.…

One reason behind high school taking place over a period of four years is to allow the students to grow and mature. I believe high school should remain to be four years because it gives the students time to mature, they will not be pressured with extra classes and work, and it allows the students more time before becoming an adult. First of all, I believe the extra years in high school allows the students more time to mature. If students were given the ability to graduate after three years of high school, the typical students would be around sixteen or seventeen years old. If one were to take this in comparison to the average senior after four years of school, they would find a two or three year age difference.…
