Should Gun Control Be Banned?

“I have a very strict gun control policy: if there is a gun around, I want to be in control of it” (Clint Eastwood).
According to Huffington Post, the deadliest city in the country is Chicago. The endless debates about guns have recently been working in favor of gun proponents. Conversely, some believe that guns should be banned, because banning them will drop the violence rate. However, some civilians believe they are necessary to help stop crime. An interview done by Matt Vespa, a reporter in CNS News, with John Lott, an author in the Crime Prevention Research Center, showed that since 1950, every public mass shooting (with the exception of two) in the U.S. has occurred in a place where civilians are banned from carrying firearms (Vespa).

Banning guns will take away the rights and libraries of many Americans by not letting them protect their families and themselves. After a 5-4 decision on gun rights, David G. Savage from the Tribune Washington Bureau writes, “…the justices said the right to have a handgun for self-defense is ‘fundamental from an American perspective (and) applies equally to the federal government and the states.”(Savage). Americans like to think they are safe at all times, but the police cannot be everywhere. In order to be protected, American need to feel safe so they would prefer to have firearms. Matthew Walberg from the Chicago Tribune reports, “…FOID (Firearm Owner Identification) cards has increased an average of about 72,000 a year since 2009...”(Walberg). Based on the data obtained by Illinois police, there are now about 1.5 million holders of Illinois firearms owner 's identification cards which correspond to an 11.5 percent of Illinoisans (FOID holders in Illinois). It is hard work to obtain a permit. According to Ray Long from the Chicago Tribune, “State Police would be required to give concealed carry license to a person if he or she meets a series of qualifications…To get a permit, a person would have to complete training...”(Long). According to the Department of Safety and Homeland Security (DSHS) applicants should pass a physical and psychological test and should have a record clean of any felonies, charges, or convictions (Handgun Carry Permit Qualifications and Requirements). These qualifications help protect our nation by completing checks to make sure permits are not given to the wrong people, so that people who are living in a hazardous neighborhood have the chance to protect themselves. David Heninzmann, a reporter in the Chicago Tribune, wrote in his report about how gun laws work:” police and prosecutors can object to a permit on several grounds if they believe a person is a danger to themselves or others. In addition to mental health issues.” (Heninzmann). Many policemen gave their opinion about the law and its impact on some people who live in dangerous areas, David Heninzmann confesses that “Several police officers who work in high-crime neighborhoods said they support the law, in part because law-abiding citizens who live in dangerous neighborhoods may have a better chance to defend
