Should Graffiti Be Allowed In School?

Although people may see graffiti all over town, no one wants to help fix it or stop it. Graffiti may look cool, but it is substantially illegal. A school building needs to look neat and nice or no one will ever want to come to it, unless of course they think that it is a mental hospital. One way that you could help stop graffiti is to install a camera where no one can visualize it but make it where the camera can see almost everything. Some people might put it behind a bush or hide in a box then super glue the box to the ground. There’re several ways to hide a camera, but there are a limited amount of ways to make it where the camera can see everything. If someone tries hard enough they can figure a way to make it where they kind of have

The ‘graffiti wars’ say about social relations of inequality and power in cities is that power of the city is in the hands of the government and those higher in power. They are the one who want to have control over what rules public space and what does not. Officials have the power to put up private corporate advertising but choose to label public graffiti as disorderly or criminal. Graffiti challenges this social order and it is those from below with lower power and faced with multiple inequalities such as race, age, social class, such as impoverished black youth and the like, that are taking back their cities and expressing urban hip hop culture, just as seen by black and hispanic urban youth in the film Style Wars (quote). It is a tool to…

Cockcroft and Barnet-Sanchez: Interpretive space is important for a group because it is a symbol or sign just as a music and language. Cockcroft and Barnet-Sanchez said: “Since before the cave paintings at Altamira some 15,000 years before the Christ, wall paintings have served as a way of community people" (Cockcroft, Barnet-Sanchez, 303). Is it true to say that murals is artistic vehicle for educating, teaching religion. The United States supported for murals during the New Deal period, and "more than 2500 murals were painted with government sponsorship" (Cockcroft, Barnet-Sanchez, 306). Especially, Mexican Americans who were born in the United States need to know their Mexicans culture anh murals is the way that they could absorb their culture easily.…

It is common for minors - understood as children under the age of 18 - to wish to be adults who can make their own rules and decisions, and to hold the perceived unrestrained freedom adults possess. This restraint and lack of freedom felt by minors, particularly teenagers, stems from the need for children to be parented and guided - a concept children and teens do not always grasp in the time of their youth. Yet one aspect of this “teen-angst” does ring true; minors do not always have the same rights and freedoms as adults. However, according to a history of court cases, First Amendments rights are ones that all people, inclusive of minors, hold. Therefore, in accordance with precedence set by court cases and the First Amendment, the novel…

In recent years, many schools have created banned book lists, banning certain books due to content deemed unsuitable for young readers, which naturally raises a question as to the justification and necessity of such a decision. I wholeheartedly disagree with this decision, as not only is censorship in general invasive to free speech, a right protected in public schools, but detrimental in the case of literature, being that there is an epidemic in the younger generation of the condition of semi-literacy. Therefore, if a student cannot obtain their literature of choice, the only logical position for them to take is to forgo reading entirely. For those reasons, it is my firmly held belief that banning any type of book would result in tempering…

Graffiti: To be Art, or not to be? Whenever you take a stroll through downtown, anywhere, old buildings and alleyways are stricken with spray painted works. The Merriam-Webster dictionary states that art is “something that is created with imagination and skill and that is beautiful or that expresses important ideas or feelings”. The painted works draw your attention and can create feelings of peace, danger, wistfulness, merriment, sadness, or even anger.…

I feel we need to look carefully at each display of graffiti. I think police officers should research each tag. There should be a database created for graffiti artists. It is a known fact that gangs use graffiti as a form of communication. If we could somehow crack this code, we could be able to know more about each gang’s movements.…

Yik Yak is a social media network where users didn’t need a large number of friends or followers to have their posts widely read, as they do on Facebook and Twitter. Some people are of the view that Yik Yak should be allowed in schools because it invites any anonymous user to “share your thoughts with people around you while keeping your privacy.” I totally disagree with because some people have used the app to make sexiest, racist, or threatening comments. First and Foremost, people used the Yik Yak to make sexist, racist, or threatening comments.…

It can bring to life whatever they can create and design in one night for the world to see the next morning. With what I’ve gathered from Mike’s perspective on graffiti, I feel as if graffiti artists have a sense of freedom to fully express themselves. I respect what Mike is doing with this beautiful form of art to use it for good. On the other hand, some people have a pre-conceived notion that graffiti is distasteful, disrespectful, and useless. It is true that the negative side to graffiti are the few that vandalize people’s personal property and paint profanities, but for the true graffiti artists’ such as Mike, they can create something bigger than themselves and help the world to become a better…

“Censor” according to Webster's Dictionary means“ to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable. Its central characteristic is the suppression of an idea or image because it offends or disturbs someone, or because they disagree with it.” Censoring textbooks and school literature isn't a correct way to prevent “inappropriate” content from falling into kids hands and it causes more harm to kids than it does good. Some of the books that were banned or censored according to (Allison Flood of the Guardian paragraph 3) consist of A Birthday Cake For George because it depicts an “Upbeat depiction of slaves lives”. Censorship is usually because of language, sexual content, religious reasons and cultural beliefs therefore parents should not censor their children's textbooks and literature unless it is very explicit or if it should be age restricted.…

Female artists Young female artists have participated in graffiti from its earliest days, but have always been the minority. In graffiti art culture, woman face many obstacles not encountered by men. The late hours and desolate locations in which most writing is done can be particularly dangerous for women. As with many male-dominated fields, the social atmosphere can be extremely harsh. Female artists are subjected to harassment and often feel that they must do more to prove themselves in the graffiti culture.…

One reason is that it is very expensive to remove proven by this point, “the cost for cleanup in the U.S. has not been documented definitively, but it is safe to assume that it is in the billions of dollars. ”(Sanchez, Noel). These cities should not have to spend billions of dollars cleaning up graffiti, when they could be paying for better things for their community. Another reason graffiti is bad in cities is that it affects the property owners. For example, “but from the viewpoint of the property owner, it is a nuisance because they have to clean it up, whether it is a business or a residence, or even the city.”…
