Should Girls Be Allowed To Wear Dress Codes

Jackson Brook, a senior in high school, once said “The worst part is by calling a girl’s clothing “distracting,” you imply that she is responsible for any disruptions. That’s like saying that because a store has a cash register, it’s the store’s fault if it gets robbed!” (http://choices.scholastic.com). Girls should be able to wear clothes that will make them feel comfortable. Not only is dress coding a hassle, it also interferes with teens self confidence, learning, and education. Dress coding is a hassle to both students and teachers. If dress coded, it goes on the teens personal record. Yes, there should be dress code rules in place, but it shouldn't be to the extreme extent that it is now. Girls are dress coded six times more than boys. 25 girls to one boy get sent to the office, and 15 girls to one boy get sent home for dress code violations almost everyday. (www.mabearnews.com). Nike shorts are worn for comfort, but were banned this year because girls wore them with long shirts and it made it look like they weren’t wearing pants. Shirts that don’t have sleeves are banned, a normal tank top (not spaghetti strap) doesn’t show very much skin, however, tank tops are viewed as suggestive. Dress coding someone takes away from time that is meant for class. By dress coding mainly girls, you’re telling them that their education is not as important than the boy that they distracted. Everyone’s education is important and should be taken into consideration when making a dress code.
Not only is the dress code rule itself stressful for the one getting dress coded, but it also disrupts learning for other students in the class. Girls should be able to wear their comfortable clothing without getting punished for it. Being able to wear clothes that express oneself is a big part of self esteem, and learning in young teens and should be thought about when creating a dress
