And George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. The hand shook violently, but his face set and his hand steadied. He pulled the trigger. The crash of the shot rolled up the hills and rolled down again. Lennie jarred, and then settled slowly forward to the sand, and he lay without quivering. Many people have wondered should George have shot Lennie? While I am upset that he shot Lennie, after thinking for awhile I think that he made the right decision. One reason that I think this is because if they tried to run away together they would have eventually been caught. Partly due to the fact that they are dealing with a murder more people will be looking for them and they didn’t get a very big head start. If they did escape though they would be looking over their shoulder and lived a unhappy fearful life. However because he had shot Lennie, while extremely sad, he would still have a job and if he ever was able to somewhat get over Lennie’s death he could be happy again. If he was fired he would have an easier time of finding a job and as George mentioned in the book there were a lot of things that he could do if he didn’t have Lennie. So while he loved Lennie he did open a few new possibilities to himself. Another way that it was the best course of action is because George did it in the kindest manner that he could for killing his best friend. He let Lennie sit down in a pretty place that he was familiar with. He had him look away and reassured him that he was not mad at him. Then he started in telling Lennie his favorite story. In fact while preparing to shoot Lennie, Lennie was so excited about how it was going to be he giggled out of happiness. He also didn’t let Lennie know what was coming making it a lot easier on
