Uniform and dress codes are opposed by students and parents and are labeled as a violation of the 1st amendment. However, students should know what they are getting into if they are applying to a school that has uniforms. When the times comes, they cannot be complaining that they have to wear uniforms if the school explicitly said they have uniforms. That is why it should be up to the school to decide whether their students should or should not wear uniforms. That way it would be easier on everyone. Still, many cases have been to the court because of overreaction to the clothes, others not so much. One case was that there were bracelets circulating around saying "I heart boobies" as a fun way to spread the word about breast cancer, but the principal suspended them for wearing it because the bracelets could be misinterpreted as lewd, from the article When school clothes lead to suspension by Ann Hoevel. Obviously, it would be lewdly interpreted. What else is expected, if something said I heart boobies, there are better, less perverted ways to spread the word about breast cancer, not wearing bracelets that would make some people feel uncomfortable. Dress codes are not restraining free speech, they are making sure free speech does not get out of hand and affecting the learning environment around
