Why Do People Have A Disability?

Improved Essays
Having a disability is a strength rather than a weakness. Everyone could work one being proud of their disabilities, as it only makes us stronger, and we can learn to focus on your abilities instead. “The worst part about a disability is that people see 'it' before they identify you.” This famous quote was presented by Easter Seals, an organization of people that work with the disabled of all ages to encourage them, so they can reach their full potential. They are attempting to change the way the world defines and views disabilities. This quote deciphers how people view disabilities before personalities. When somebody looks at a disabled person for the first time, they’ll presumably observe their disability before their ability. Disabled …show more content…
Having a disability strengthens your thoughts, and you will learn about your abilities too! People with disabilities should be treated normally, just as you would treat your best friend, and how your best friend treats you. Nobody likes being treated differently. All they want is your respect and kindness. These little details can affect their thoughts and lives! Think about how the little things affect their lives, like walking away from them, staring, or looking away, telling them they can't do something when they haven’t even tried, whispering about them behind their back, etc... All these examples, and more, can influence and affect someone's life. Some phrases never leave someone's head and can change how someone thinks about themselves. The next time you see a disabled person, treat them like a normal person. When they realize that how they are being handled and talked to is not ‘normal’, they won't feel any better. Most people call them ‘cute’, but the truth is, they're more than that. If you catch someone talking about someone's disabilities, stop them, and tell them to focus on their abilities. You need to learn to see beyond a person’s

In the transcript of the 2014 TED talk, I’m Not Your Inspiration, Stella Young, asserts that a disability does not make a person aberrant from the rest of society, they use their body to the best of their abilities like everyone else. She first develops her claim by introducing herself and her personal encounter with the over-exaggerated sympathy for disabled people. Young uses pathos to discuss the fact that disabled people are not seen as normal to most people, but they are simply just objects of inspiration. Then, Young suggests that people have been lied to about how disability is a bad thing. She claims that disabilities are not dreadful and they are not something to be impressed by either.…

Many of us have encountered someone with a disability or are not fully able-bodied ourselves. One of my high school friends has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound. Even though it is regulated that schools must be handicap accessible, I saw the struggles my friend went through because our society is structure based on the perfectly able-bodied. Due to his condition, my friend was not allowed to take tests at the same time as the rest of the students. He was excluded, and this further ostracized him based on his condition.…

Personally, the section of G. Thomas Couser’s piece, Disability, Life Narrative, and Represention that truly made an impression on me was on page 456, when he writes “Although it is as fundamental an aspect of human diversity as race, ethnicity, gender, and sexuality, it is rarely acknowledged as such.” I was almost unsettled after reading this statement, as I realized that I myself fall into the vast population that is essentially uniformed about disability. Just because those with a disability have a physical or mental “impairment,” by no means does that make them substantially that different than any other human being. When I think about other minority groups, whether it be in regards to race, sexuality, or gender, I have a common view that “people are people” and that’s it. However, reading this piece served as a great breakthrough for me as I realized that I, in fact, did not look at people with disabilities in this manor, but rather as a group that I felt unfortunately had to deal with an everyday burden in their lives.…

However, through the evolution of laws and policies, these individuals are now becoming equal participants in today’s society (Equality article). Because of this, there are several resources across the United States that are being made available. Most are constantly made fun of, held back, cut off from reality, and pushed aside. Society today has a decreasing understanding and acceptance for disabled people and their families. It is important for one to remember disabilities come in all types and severities, but that does not define the person or their family. Families that include disabled members have no right to get judged because the family will do anything in their power to stick together through anything. Jane Goodall once said,“Every individual matters.…

Throughout history the treatment of people with a disability has been uncalled for. During 1800’s, people saw the disabled as evil and “not normal”. They were treated like they weren’t even human. According to American Bar Association “Persons with disabilities were seen as objects of charity or welfare or as needing to be subjected to medical treatment or cure.” All they want is to be treated like a normal person, but they can’t if everyone sees them like a monster.…

Many ordinary everyday people are oblivious to how they treat and act around those who are mentally or physically disabled. Three certain writers have written personal narratives and examined their views and their lives on being physically disabled. “Why The Able-Bodied Still Don’t Get it”, by Andre Dubus, “Disability”, by Nancy Mairs and “Should I Have Been Killed at Birth?”, by Harriet McBryde Johnson all relate to a certain aspect in life, which is living with disability. Even though each individual essay describes different attitudes and stories, they all seem to interact with one another by sharing some common ground. They are expressing their feelings about how the well and fit individuals treat them in a patronizing, pitying, and sometimes…

How Elizabeth Moon’s Challenge the Way People Perceive Disability “Speed of Dark” by Elizabeth Moon, is a novel that not only shares with us of how one copes with a disability but how they are perceived differently by others. Some nondisabled people do not empathize with disabled people and the challenges they face while others show compassion and see them as a real person. Nondisabled people do not take the time to educate themselves and understand the disability to enable them to offer support when needed and take in consideration of what life of a person with a disability must be like. They are quickly judgmental and do not give enough credit where credit is due. One living with a disability is often tagged and labeled; such as an inconvenience,…

Throughout many years of history, those with disabilities were not always treated fairly or given equal opportunity. Activists around the world have worked together to achieve goals such as increased access to all types of transportation and a safer day to day environment. Equal opportunities in employment and education have been a big part of their efforts too. For many years, children with disabilities were many times segregated and not given an equal opportunity for a chance to learn and succeed in school. A disability should not limit a person’s choice to improve themselves and their intellectual capabilities.…
