Designer Babies Should Not Be Allowed
Most people have heard of Build-A-Bear Workshop and how they allow someone to customize a stuffed animal however they would like. Now, imagine doing that with a baby. Thanks to new advances in technology and research, this may become a reality very soon. One such technology capable of restructuring genetic codes in human embryos is the CRISPR-Cas9 method. This works by using an enzyme found in bacteria to snip out segments of DNA and replace the section with a customized code of DNA (Burke). Using this method, there is no limit to the changes one can make to a human embryo, whether it is enhancing intelligence, speed, strength, height, beauty, etc. A “Designer baby” is the term used to describe a

In Aldous Huxley’s book Brave New World, children are made to fit one specific role in society, and that has produced a caste system that restricts people from becoming anything other than what the higher power has created them for (source). The people creating the children even go so far as to limit the amount of oxygen the lower class receives in order to decrease their brain development because they would not need it for their future job (source). …show more content…
Chinese scientists have already tried using this technology to replace a certain segment of DNA and out of the 56 embryos tested; only 4 produced the desired effect (source). In addition, even those 4 embryos had multiple unexpected mutations (?). This proves that the technology is still not capable of producing accurate results on demand, and should not be used to alter children (enter quote about making stuff happen). Furthermore, this technology would be disastrous in the wrong hands. If this technology were to be widely available to any so called “scientist” with a lab in his garage, there would be a huge risk for someone messing with the wrong genes in anything and accidentally creating a disease to cause the next plague, and, thanks to China, CRISPR-Cas9 kits are now available for just $130 (source). Plus, there would be nothing to stop dictators, such as the one in North Korea, from using the technology to create an army of super soldiers by enhancing strength, speed, eyesight, aggressiveness, etc. This would be disastrous for whomever the dictator decides to unleash the genetically altered army on. These examples prove that humanity is not capable of playing God with any skill.
While the reasons for banning designer babies and the related technology can be overwhelming, there are some positives aspects that cannot

SUMMARY/PRECIS Professor Ronald Green of Dartmouth University, in his article, Building Baby from Genes Up, addresses the topic of whether or not genetic engineering is a viable technological advancement for our society to pursue and argues that although there are many potential drawbacks, the overall benefits of genetic engineering outweigh its downfalls. He supports this claim by addressing the variety of benefits that genetic engineering can offer, then by categorically refuting counterarguments and finally by presenting his opinion for why each downfall of genetic engineering is surmountable. Green’s purpose is to shed light on both sides of the argument when it comes to genetic engineering, while posing the idea that genetic engineering…

You may ask “what are designer babies?” Well, designer babies are when the parents of a baby can choose the phenotypes, also known as your traits, such as eye color, height, hair color, and many more. Although having to pick your own baby’s trait would be nice, there are indeed some ethical and moral issues when doing so. One obvious problem is the cost, the practice is not going to be cheap. As a result, not everyone is going to afford this cost which can lead to a society gap, where designer babies will be smarter and better than ordinary babies.…

With the advancements made in technology daily and new scientific studies and explorations, the science community is always on the brink of something big. And the next big thing might be designer babies. Deeper and more profound exploration into cells and genetics have allowed for the possibility of designer babies to emerge. Before creating designer babies was even an idea, scientists were first working towards sequencing the human genome. By sequencing the human genome, scientists will be able to identify which nucleotide sequences code for which genes.…

I think that designer genes are morally wrong, except when it’s used to cure diseases. There are many reasons designer genes are wrong, and many unforeseen consequences. The majority of scientists think that customizing genes is wrong. You can’t just make “better people” using engineering (theoretically). The question of “designer babies” is one that is fairly recent and controversy of the topic starts from the very definition of the term. When one is presented with the term “designer babies”, Most people imagine a genetically engineered being who is less human and more technology. This false stigma mainly comes from the negative reputation of Genetically modified species such as food or animals. However, the reality is quite different, it can be argued that even choosing a fertilised cell as an embryo during IVF is a form of a designer baby. After conducting a questionnaire; 86.76% of people believed a “designer baby” was a being which was genetically engineered to have selective traits.…

While the idea of creating an artificial child may seem immoral, there are more advantages to designer babies than just eliminating disabilities. In addition to creating a fairer environment for all children, this procedure could also make them live longer with the discarding of disease causing genes. Furthermore, the newfound experience and data collected from this procedure could also help geneticists progress faster in their research in genetics. The operation could be also viewed as ethically accepted since some women take prenatal pills during pregnancy to ensure…

Designer babies can almost be compared to robots. They are all designed to do and perform the same way and this may be the result in designing children. This will affect biodiversity and affect the child’s freedom because the child will never have the chance to be their own individual. “Moreover, the diversity of the gene pool and human genetics will be affected, and this may even lead to a major percentage of the human race being wiped out completely by some major disease” (Buzzle.com, 2011, Designer para. 6).…

The possibility of being capable of changing the human genome to prevent or treat devastating illnesses and serious inherited diseases has always being in the mind of many people and scientists. However, two important events may contribute to make this idea a reality in the near future. One is the decoding of human genome. This has allow scientists the opportunity to comprehend how the genetic information controls the growth, configuration and function of the human body; and at the same time, to understand how variations within our DNA sequence cause diseases.…

Picture this: a world where everyone looks exactly the same--ridden with birth defects, religion has disappeared because people can control their environment with a simple insertion or deletion of a gene, and no one is sure of the future because every couple years, a virus that was supposed to harmlessly alter genes mutates to harmfully cause a deadly epidemic. Sound familiar? Maybe not yet, but at the rate we 're going, the world isn 't far away from the scenario just described due to the ever-increasing rate of genetic engineering occurring in today 's world. From genetically modified crops to mice that glow in the dark to bacteria that produce insulin, countless uses of genetic engineering have appeared in just a few short years, and without…
