Should Death Be Taught In Schools

“Death is the surest event in our lives from the moment we take our first breaths into this world” (). This is to state that death is unavoidable in our lives and therefore is an imperative topic to learn about as it will affect everyone eventually. Children are no exception to this claim, as they typically deal with the passing of grandparents and pets at a young age. Distancing children from the concept of death only promotes misunderstandings and it is through death education. Many see death as something that happens to other, but not to themselves. Facing and accepting our immortality is a large part of understanding death. Possessing knowledge on death, dying and bereavement will significantly impact how people cope and handle the struggles surrounding dealing with a death. …show more content…
“Though we are never happy when death visits… it is essential to address the topic in schools so that students and teachers may be better able to cope when it comes visiting” (). Numerous television shows display and have death as a main component of their program. However, people often having difficulties coping when death affects them personally and the taboo of talking about death can lead too many to not be able to open to others about their struggles. This circumvention approach around death causes people to not only avoid talking to others about their grief, but also leaves individuals to avoid planning death arrangements. Important issues like power of medical attorney, funeral wishes, or even a will may not be completed simply due to a person’s fear of death. This article attempts to utilize death education to normalize dying to the average individual so that fear does not stop them from making vital end of life
