Does it make you uncomfortable when someone says “God isn’t real” or “evolution is completely fake”? What if you were taught these things were fact, and you had to believe them? Creationism is the religious belief that God or some inhuman power created the world. On the other hand, evolution is defined as the genetics of a species changing over time by various means. Neither creationism nor evolution should be taught as factual science and should not be indoctrinated into students, but can be taught as a theory and philosophy that should be viewed with scrutiny. Teaching evolution or creationism as fact imposes specific beliefs onto an individual, only teaching them what to think, not how. According to the Discovery Institute, evolution should not be taught as fact, but as a theory open to judgement. Creationism is not science, as it deals with unexplainable phenomena. Frederick Edwords, author of Why Creationism Should Not Be Taught As Science, also believes neither religion nor creationism should be a part of the science curriculum. However, most people actually do want evolution taught in schools. In 2008, Barack Obama stated that the matters of science should be scientific fact, not theory, which students do not need to develop and understand. But in order to understand how the universe works, evolution answers key factors about the world’s creation and processes. Both evolution and creationism should be taught in schools, but at a limit in which they do not brainwash students into belief. If we force beliefs onto a student, we are like Hitler, who taught German children what to think.
