Should College Be Free

I feel the quote, “The rights of genius are being democratized in order that people may be relieved of the labor of acquiring culture, and their need of it.”, found on page 45 of Greening Philosophy, relates to my educational experiences the most out of the text. By breaking down the quote, I personally found it relaying that teachers, or genius, are accessible to students to teach culture without the students having to go out and personally experience or research culture. In the next few sentences, the philosopher claims that experiencing culture is for few people. I believe this section relates to my transition into college. In high school, most of the information was taught to be memorized, so the most educated people in the room were the teachers, who had actual experience in their subjects. …show more content…
In college, I know that I will be learning and experiencing culture and science myself, which is something the philosopher says is suppose to be for the intelligent only or the genius. The companion challenges the philosophers principal by saying everyone has the right to work hard and attain education. Being of the few to have attained the amount of education he had, the philosopher seemed offended by the idea of equal opportunities. In our current period, the idea of equal opportunities is controversial. Should college be free, should only the rich be able to be educated? I grew up in the first state, Tennessee, to make a form of college free. I am growing up in a time where the idea of education is changing and I feel like the quote I chose from the passage captured the change our nation is currently going
