In 2010, President Barack Obama said in his State of the Union Address, “[I]n the United States of America, no one should go broke because they chose to go to college” (“Notable Quotes”). But unfortunately in today’s world, many students graduate college with a good deal of debt. This is a problem, and the recent presidential election has caused more in-depth debate about this issue. Many people believe that college should be free, but there are also those who believe it is something that should be paid for in full by the student. With college tuition prices on the rise, and in the declining state of the economy, many people do not realize how hard it is for poor and middle class students to graduate with little or no loans. They do not acknowledge the fact that many families cannot afford to pay for rent, bills, and food and still send their children to college. By making two year community college tuition free, we can decrease student loan debt and ensure that more young Americans can have a brighter future.
The problem of student loan debt started with the Servicemen 's Readjustment Act of 1944, also known as the GI Bill of Rights. According to National Public Radio, the University of Kentucky’s University Research Professor John Thelin says that “the law made college affordable for a group of veterans who never would have thought of going beyond high school” (qtd. in Sanchez).
