Should College Be Free Essay

You may think having to pay for college is bad, but the quality of the education is reflected by the price you pay. Overtime, the cost for state and community college has skyrocketed, but after further examination it is clear that free tuition has more disadvantages than benefits. College should not be free because taxes will spike and colleges will become overcrowded. To begin with, making colleges free may look good on paper, but in reality it is not good for the economy. As stated in Source C, “Free college tuition plans merely shift the costs of education from one group of taxpayers to all taxpayers” (Source C). Many people are proposing free college; however, really other citizens are just paying the price. Also stated in Source C, “It is simply a matter of who pays the cost” (Source C). …show more content…
Andrew Kelly states “Though many students already attend community college tuition-free, student success rates are discouragingly low at these institution” (Source B). This shows that colleges are already letting tuition free student into campus and it doesn’t work, this would be the case only on steroids if we let everybody come to college for free. Kelly also states “... lead students to be ‘undermatch’, which would lower their odds of completing a degree” (Source B). Not only would students have a challenging path to follow when there is a normal amount of young adults, imagine when universities added more than double the students and expect them to complete a degree. Source B says, “... free community college could actually lower rates of student success” (Source B). With more incoming freshman, professor will be spread thin because of how many students they must teach. Although many argue that the cost of attending a university is worth the price, others disagree, arguing that students should not have to pay for a college
